Major virus?

I have a chum running XP-Home and all his PC will do is run to just before NTLogon and freeze - so all nice and blue and freezes just before the User name / Password screen pops up. Just to make things really interesting, he only has a 98 recovery disk so can't read the NTFS partition on his only HDD. I think this is a boot virus and will require a clen install. Any ideas?

PS - He does have a hisotry of being a Kazaa monkey and although he does have AVG and Zone Alarm, he's not the best at updates.

First try to log on in Safe Mode. If that does not work, I would try doing a repair of WinXP with the CD.

None of the F8 options work at all and so all he can do is get to the CMD prompt with the 98 boot disk. His Master disks are OEM recovery jobs and so it looks like a clean install might be in order.

Any WinXP Home CD will do as long as he has his CD-Key, for doing a repair.
