Question Automatic Disconnects from Internet

Chaps/Chappesses

I am having a problem with my computer - no surprises there then. Whenever I connect to the internet (dial up modem) after a few seconds I get a pop-up message saying "You have an incoming call. Your internet connection has been terminated, press yes and pick up the phone". The message occurs everytime I connect to the internet using my home computer, however does not occur when I use the same dial up settings on my laptop. (As far as I am aware I do not have Call waiting on my phone, and if I try to dial my home phone number from my mobile this does not cause the same problem).

If I pick up my telephone handset after the computer has connected to the internet all I hear is what sounds like my computer trying to go through the "handshaking" process again. This then throws the internet connection off line.

Both computers are running Norton Internet Security and Windows XP. Any suggestions on what I might try in order to stop this happening as this is most frustrating??

Sounds like your modem does not isolate your handset/telephone when it goes Off Hook.

Some handsets grab a little power from the line every now and then to keep any internal memory alive. When this happens it can disrupt the server which may toss you off. Try unplugging the handset.

Also make sure call waiting is disabled. This will toss you off too.

My server seems to go to sleep for long periods. I can wake it up by going to Outlook Express and regularly clicking on Send/Receive. When it reacts I can go gang busters for a while until it fades away again.

Also have you line checked from the exchange.

Also make sure call waiting is disabled. This will toss you off too.
Millions of men will now turn on call waiting in the hopeful event of getting 'tossed off'.........ANYWAY

On a serious note, make sure you run a spyware check and anti virus etc. Also try Spyware Blaster it kills activeX components and stips them from ever running.

p.s. sorry it does not KILL the activeX - it simply prevents it from ever running - you will need some spy software to do this - try Spybot

YOU DON'T HAVE TO TURN CALL WAITING OFF!!!!!!

All you have to do is alter the number your computer is dialing by adding :

*52,,

to the front of the number your computer is dialing.
My ISP dial number is 087303030 so if i had this problem, I'd change it to:

*52,,087303030

To do this... Next time you connect, before you press the dial or connect button, click on properties.
This will bring up the control panel for the dialer. Simply add the *52,, to the beginning of the number you see in 'Telephone Number'.

This should solve the problem aaand allow you to enjoy the convenience of call waiting while you are not surfin the net.

Another reason Windows XP disconnects is if Outlook Express (email programme) is set to "Hang up after sending and receiving". This is usually set by default.

To check this, open Outlook Express. Click on 'Tools' at the top. Click on 'Options' then click on the 'Connection' tab and under the Dial up heading, make sure that the "Hang up after sending and recieving" box is not ticked.
