Bad Karmah! (problems)
My setup.
Win XP + SP1
Pentium 4 2.? chip
512 ram
40G hard drive
128 Nvidiea (4) graphics card
All updated
Latest virus patterns in Norton.
SYSTEM SWITCHES ITSELF OFF IN MIDDLE OF ANYTHING FROM 10 MINS TO 2 HRS USAGE (oops caps lock finger strikes again)
on restart
wallpaper is present but no icons on screen at all.
Other times switches on OK but will not switch off using "switch off computer" button or "restart".
any ideas? been fine for months and this starts a few days ago.

Thanks for that and I had thought about it.
The following readings from the BIOS are typical:
Sys Fan 0 RPM
CPU fan 2766 RPM
Power Temp 32c / 91
Sys temp 34c / 93
CPU temp 34c/93
On boot up it says that it want to report a MAJOR PROBLEM TO MICROSOFT.
:
c
windows\minidump\mini033104-02.dmp
c
documen~1\jim\locals~1\wer\tmp.dir00\sysdata.xml
should I send?

jimgriff,
The first thing I thought about was a cooling issue as PretoriaSillyperson said.
It could be the heatsink or thermal grease is not on the CPU properly. It will cause uneven cooling and have the CPU lock up.
Take Care,
Richard
P.S. Sending the report is useless.

TCS,
I never trust the Fan Speed Readings. Half the time they are just not getting the signal. To add to your point, when you open the case, also point a house fan into the opened side of the case which will provide additional airflow and cooling. It is a great way to test for overheating of the system.
