Yet Another IE problem

Booted up the Win2K laptop this am and double-clicked a URL short-cut on the desktop but instead of opening the web-page it took me to two overlaid dialogue windows - one advising that my very aged Opera beta had expired and the other asking if I wanted to save the file or open it (the open option opening it in Opera). Uninstalled the Opera and checked file associations (url, htm, html) were with IE6 but after System Mechanic and a reboot, all it would do was offer to open or save the .url file. The "open" dialogue box wouldn't open it as a page - just as source html code.

No spyware and protected by Panda Antivirus and firewall.

Anybody have any ideas - ----------?

Anyone recall the IE6 "repair" procedure?

Updating IE has been known to fix problems. Try updating IE and see if that solves the problem. If not, then we will look at other options.

web-page shortcuts all corrupted

Removed the one pack found and tried (no luck)
re-installed the new IE6 pack Q824145 and that seems to have achieved nix. (also seems to have a different number from the one removed).

Any web-page short-cut now asks whether to open or save.
Open goes to the source html and save is a closed loop to the very same dialogue box.

Also cleared history, checked IE6 options and went default in most areas. No joy thus far. The perils of beta-checking eh?

The only thing in the Microsoft Knowledge Base is:

But it does not sound like it applies to you. Have you thought about putting a non BETA Version of Opera back and uninstalling it again?

Already tried that Opera re-install. No joy there either. Transferred across the network an identical lik from another Win2K machine and that wouldn't work. It does appear that Opera has opera(ted) on my registry. Contents of the link follows. Not sure what the "modified" is (i.e. it may refer to a key registry entry).

Doubt this will work, but it would be interesting to see what it does. Try creating a new User Account, and see if it suffers from the same problem. Give the new Account Administrator Privileges.

This is the Reg Key where the information for IE is stored. Might be worth a look around this Key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer

Yes, suffers from the same problem and nothing noted from a key by key trawl through that registry entry. The actual "error " message is here below

Pasted it into notepad, then saved it as test.url and IE loaded the website without a problem.

I am wondering if your Antivirus or the settings on your firewall could be blocking IE from opening the website.

Solved it at last

File Association for .url had become corrupted (sometimes the hardest problems are the easiest - or should be)
