Networking a WinXP PC with a Win2K PC - is it possible?

I've just upgraded to Win2K on my main PC, but would prefer, (if only to save the time), to leave the number 2 machine on Win2K. I've had the two PCs linked on a simple crossed cable network (no hub) when they both ran Win2K, but when I tried to network them with the WinXP machine as host, the options aren't there to establish the network.

Is it possible? The MS wizard gives options for Win98 and ME, but not Win2k.

Most certainly. But there are a number of "tweaks" that you may have to do to the new XP installation to create the contact.

Using TCP/IP? Check the Subnet masks are the same and that the IP addresses are allocated. The default on the new XP machine will be "automatic".

Initially if you're not sharing an Internet connection, it's simplest to use the NetBEUI protocol.

Check the "guest" account on both is enabled. That's in control Panel/Users and Passwords/Users.

See how you get on with that.

Peer-to-Peer Workgroup Setup

p.s.

NETBEUI isn't installed as standard by XP, but it is on the CD. Here's the instructions on how to add it.
Install NetBEUI on Windows XP. NETBEUI is fine for a local workgroup and will get around the Windows ICF firewall. See here.
