Here are a few others: Asociacion Sindical de Pilotos Aviadores de Mexico Caribbean ALPA Jamaican Airline Pilots Association (JALPA) Sindicato de Pilotos de Lan Chile Pagina no oficial de los pilotos de Iberia (not Latin American, but see the "Destinos" then "Miami Hub" section for some great information about Iberia's destinations in Central America from a pilot's perspective) Corporacion Centroamericana de Servicios de Navegacion Aerea (COCESNA) The agency responsible for ATC and navigation services for Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and a large part of the Western Caribbean waters. Their site also has Notams for this area. |
Sorry that these are brazilian sites, but for the spanish speaker shouldn't be a hassle to understand most of it.

Found a few interesting Mexican websites:
aviacion.com.mx All sorts of interesting stuff here, including links with information for seemingly any kind of government application in Mexico, information for flying to Mexico, airports, schools, etc. Suposedly also a subscription service for job hunters. FEDERACION MEXICANA DE PILOTOS Y PROPIETARIOS DE AERONAVES, A.C. A group for Mexican private aircraft owners and pilots (like AOPA in the United States). Also has an English section. Check the "Ligas" section for many links to Mexican and non-Mexican websites (lots of links to Mexican aviation legislation. elcapi.com.mx Another site providing some links to Mexican aviation including aviation schools and skydiving, with a subscription service to job hunters. Colegio de Pilotos Aviadores de Mexico Not an aviation academy . . . nor even a union, for a lack of better words, this organization provides a profesional umbrella for it's members-- it is probably the closest thing if pilots could get as organized as a group of professionals as do doctors and lawyers (code of ethics, participation in accident investigation, conflict disputes, assistance in applications, etc.) Also with a section dedicated to rotary wing pilots, and aviation legislation information. |

Asociación Latino Americana de Derecho Aeronáutico y Espacial (ALADA) For the "legal eagles" and based in Buenos Aires. From their website: "ALADA is the leading association in the air transport business in Latin America and with an important international exposure. ALADA has (and still does) asist and advice the leading decisión makers of the air transport business in aspects that go far beyond the legal ones, in such varied millieu as economic-commercial and even in the higher education of new leaders of the business."

Your question, Kimberly, belongs in a different thread. To answer your question, however, I don't know of any opportunities in Panama, myself not having lived there for over 5-years. Also, unless you are a Panamanian or married to a Panamanian, the employment scene as well as even getting a Commercial Licence or ATP in most Latin American countries is pretty much restricted.

Flying Gliders (sailplanes) in Uruguay!!! COOL!!! :ok: Centro Uruguayo de Planeadores La Caída del vuelo 901 Done by the Costa Rican newspaper La Prensa Grafica, this is an interesting website about the crash of Aviateca Flt 901 (a Boeing 737-200), which occured on August 9, 1995, and remains El Salvador's worst aviation accident. The aircraft was a victim of Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT) into Volcán Chichontepec while on descent into SAL and deviating around weather. Fascinating pictures, as well as a 15 minute audio recreation of the flight. Unfortunately for non-Spanish speakers, most of the information is in Spanish. |

If you are talking about where there are gliderports in Panamá or Costa Rica, sorry, I don't know that there are any (sadly), nor for that matter anywhere in Central America.
If you are asking about suitable aerodromes and locations for gliders, then I would think that in Costa Rica, in the Guanacaste region around Liberia (this is the northeast region near the Nicaraguan border) would be ideal due with it's ample flat farm-land (places to land out) mixed with hills in the surrounding area and many thermals. In Panama, it is typically more humid, and while there is no shortage of Cu's and thermal lift, the cloud bases are lower due to the temp/dewpoint spread. There are a few aerodromes that may be quite suitable around Rio Hato, Penonomé, and Chitré, just a couple hours drive from Panama City. The Azuero Peninsula is the dryest part of Panama and offers the best flying conditions as far as visibility and ceilings, it's been a few years but it seems to me that it was bumpy everywhere when I flew around in the BE90. :ok: Truth be told, I've fantasied numerous times about what it might be like to have a motor-glider in Central America. |

Looking for some good advice
I'm looking into getting my CPL but I'm not sure where I want to have my training. I speak both Spanish and English and would love to fly for LAN and do some kind of training in Chile. However, I have been told that it is better to get training in the states. Is this true? What is the difference in quality? If I got a CPL in Chile would it be considered valuable to airlines in the states?
Anyone that has experience with this or any kind of advice is more than welcome to help me decide what I want to do! |
