A/C hire in Caribbean
Does anyone know any FBO's in the Caribbean where I could hire a PA28/C182 or equivalent for a weeks tour of the islands?

Ace Flying School on St. Thomas is a possibility. You would need an FAA certificate which can be obtained at the FAA FSDO at San Juan, Puerto Rico.

I think you will find cheaper rates in the states for rentals (Puerto Rico/Virgin Islands). They will require a US License. You can get a US license based on your foreign license for free, while visiting.
Islands are all pretty close together so flights from say Puerto Rico down island just adds another hour or so. Even if you went to Florida and travelled down island its just a few hours more and some beautiful stops along the way. Ive done it by Helicopter, which at times can make one a bit nervous over blue water.
The only other hang up would be insurance and taking the aircraft outside the U.S. I dont know the policy for that but will help you out if you need the information.
Ask the question to AOPA www.aopa.org - they are usually helpful. Also, there is one book out thats almost a must when tackling something like this. Its called the Bahamas and Caribbean Pilots Guide. You can purchase one from Sportys www.sportys.com Its a real tool for airports and all the incidentals like customs etc....which is another story.
