New international airport opens in Guatemala

Further to the previous thread (now closed), the Guatemalan paper La Prensa Libre reports that a new international airport was opened yesterday at the Pacific coastal city of Puerto San José in the Department of Escuintla. The project was completed at the cost of 32 million Quetzales (aproximately $4.2 million USD). The new airport will primarily serve as an alternate airport to Guatemala City, allowing a domestic alternative aerodrome for flight diversions if the La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City closes due to airspace closures, storms or fog. Previously, traffic would divert to other countries such as San Salvador.

In addition, it is expected to be useful for the approximately 140,000 cruise ship tourists who arrive in Guatemala every year, since there was previously no good air travel options to facilitate visits to other locations in Guatemala. I imagine they are talking about Puerto San José- Flores (Tikal) as one possibility.
