Post TACA announces major fleet expansion

AIRBUS News:

GDCM 66/2004R
14th December 2004

TACA ORDERS 14 AIRBUS A320 FAMILY AIRCRAFT AND BECOMES THE FIRST A321 CUSTOMER IN LATIN AMERICA

TACA, one of the most important airlines in Latin America, has signed a firm contract for the purchase of 14 additional Single Aisle Airbus aircraft including for the first time the A321 in Latin America.

With this incremental order, the total of Airbus aircraft that remains to be delivered to TACA increases from 12 to 26 units (five A319s, 16 A320s and five A321s). Deliveries of these 26 aircraft will take place between April 2005 and September 2009.

TACA already successfully operates a fleet of 32 Airbus aircraft (eight A319s and 24 A320s) serving the whole American Continent from Canada in the North to Argentina and Chile in the South. This highlights the A320 Family flexibility and efficiency to operate in very different and demanding environments.

“The Airbus A320 Family is for us the ideal mix in terms of performance, reliability, flexibility, great economics whilst providing our passengers with the highest level of comfort,” said Roberto Kriete, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of TACA, “. With the A321, we look forward to making another major step in unit cost reduction, which will further sharpen our competitive edge.”

“We are extremely honoured by this renewed sign of confidence in our products,” said Noël Forgeard, President and Chief Executive Officer of Airbus, “We view this order as the culmination of the remarkable turnaround TACA has achieved. With this new order TACA will be able to take full benefit of the commonality concept of the A320 Family which has become the preferred choice of airlines around the world.”

TACA will be the first airline in Latin America to operate the A321 as of September 2005. The A321 will seat up to 186 passengers in a two-class configuration and will offer the lowest operating costs per seat in its class. As a member of the Airbus A320 Family, the A321 will enable TACA to use the same pilots, cabin crew and maintenance facilities as for its 120 seat A319s and 150 seat A320s.

The Airbus A320 Family is the market’s fastest selling aircraft family with nearly 3300 aircraft sold to over 140 customers and operators around the world.

Airbus A320 Family features the most modern design of any single-aisle aircraft, with the widest and most comfortable cabin, excellent economics and extensive commonality with other Airbus aircraft. It is the only single aisle, fly-by-wire technology aircraft in the market.

A leading aircraft manufacturer with the most modern and comprehensive product line on the market, Airbus is a global company with design and manufacturing facilities in France, Germany, the UK, and Spain as well as subsidiaries in the U.S., China and Japan. Headquartered in Toulouse, France, Airbus is an EADS joint Company with BAE Systems.

My point is . . . quoting a news source-- AIRBUS NEWS GDCM 66/2004R, 14th December 2004, to be exact.

According to Forbes some of the existing aircraft will be retired and a total fleet size of 45 aircraft is expected by the end of 2009.

Any guess on where we'll see the A-321s? Maybe Los Angeles? "AeroHonduras" brought this up to me recently, but TA have been operating a lot of red-eyes from Miami to SJO, MGA, GUA etc. -- obviously increasing fleet utilization, but I am not certain I'd want to arrive in some of these destinations at 3 or 4am. Any idea how they're performing?
