Thumbs up BWIA Flies Aircrafts To Guyana

Just heard on the news that BWIA have flown all there aircraft which were at Piarco International Airport (TTPP) to Guyana.

I have heard that hurricanes avoid the equator, is that true? I know that Guyana is very near the equator and actually the equator passes over Guyana

Can someone please explain.

Would be appreciated. Thanks alot.
