A320 Simulators in Canada

Hi folks,
Looking for information re training organisations in Canada where one can do a PPC / Skill Test on an A320 Level D simulator.

I have sent an email to CAE Toronto, haven't heard back as yet...

Any other options?

I have received a response from CAE Toronto; seems like their slots are quite packed for the next few months...

It may very well be cheaper and quicker to pay the expenses of a Transport Canada examiner to do the check in a US sim, depending on the location.

I've yet to find anything that's cheaper in Canada than the US.

And that's taking into account the exchange rate.

You may have problems entering the USA to take large aircraft training, you will need to contact American Border security, good luck.

Thank you all for the responses, it is indeed very helpful.

It seems to be quite difficult to obtain sim slots with CAE in Canada.

Doing the TC check ride in the US seems to be a good idea. I had not considered that option.

I have already spoken to a few flight schools in the US, but that was for an FAA ATP course. Perhaps I could ask them about the possibility of a TC skill test in the US.

Any suggestions on how/where I may be able to get a TC check airman to do the checkride in the US?

The ride can’t be done by a flight school in the US. The ride must be conducted by a TC Inspector (not ACP). TC does not have a travel budget to send their inspectors to conduct the tests. Even if they did have a budget, it’s a nightmare to get through the process to have the Inspector to get approval from Ottawa to travel (near impossible). If you were lucky to have an Inspector to get travel authority, you are on the hook for all travel/ expenses and costs associated. You could buy your own simulator and start your own company for all the headaches you will encounter.

One more point of clarification. Transport Canada doesn't administer PPCs - you can only get a PPC from an airline with an approved training program and they can only give PPCs to their own pilots. When you pay for your own simulator time, all you can get is a check ride that qualifies you for a type rating on your Canadian licence and / or an IFR check. Also, there are designated examiners who are not TC inspectors who can conduct the check.

Could I ask, what do you want a A320 rating on a Canadian license for? Anyone hiring for an A320 job in Canada would be providing the training for that aircraft, and already having the rating wouldn't enhance your chances of getting that job.

77AV8R has highlighted one of the main characteristics of aviation and Canada in general, the difficulty and expense in getting anything done even if you are willing to pay the cost. It's a heavily socialist country, if you don't fit in the system comrade, you're pretty much out of luck.

There are hoops to jump through to conduct training in the US for non-citizens, but they're hardly insurmountable. Any FSDO can walk you through that.

Do you hold any other license, ie FAA/EASA or other? If you really want a heavy jet rating on a Canadian license, other than working for a Canadian operator, it will probably be easier to do it somewhere else on another license and then transfer it to your Canadian one.

Otherwise Canada's industry and regulatory infrastructure is too small, insular, and protectionist to offer much assistance.

Thanks for your responses.

My main aim is to obtain the TC ATPL.

The only reason why I wanted to do it on the 320 Simulator is because I am currently a TRI on the 320. And most of my experience in the past 15 yrs has been on transport category passenger jets; not sure how many hours training will I need to be able to come up to speed for an ATPL checkride on a twin piston.

However, based on all the feed that I have received, I think I may have to do it on a twin piston.

Speaking to a few local flight schools. Any recommendations for flight schools in the GTA?

No you don't as long as you get the written exams done you can do your ride on a level D a320 sim

I am also planning to do the same, any update on conversion.? I am also looking for Canadian ATPL with A320 endorsement. Currently I’m flying A320 in India as Capt.

You can't just walk in here and even hope to 'buy' an ATPL...Best you have a look here: https://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviati...086.htm#421_34 and make sure you meet all the requirements.
You will have to write all of the exams and prove that you've done all the training.......do the homework.
