Arrow 172 Crash at Bounday Bay

172 crash immediately after take-off, two fatalities. Spent many an hour out of CZBB, bloody busy but this appears to have nowt to do with congestion. Tragic

Vancouver Sun report

Regency Express was the company. Pilot apparantly had fresh PPL, good luck in his recovery.

C-GRIL? I had quite a few hours in that plane!

Hope the survivor pulls through

Thumbs down Bad journalism

What silly comments in the Vancouver Sun article (BTW, thanks for the link SpinSpinSugar):

"Gerbrandt said police don't know why the plane crashed, and or even why the group was going up in the air. He said the plane was not registered to any of the people in it when it crashed.

"In July 2001, the Boundary Bay Airport was rated the second-worst by Transport Canada for keeping unauthorized people and vehicles off its runways."

Seems like they are implying that the accident happened 'cuz some unqualified nut walked onto the apron unchallenged and tried to steal the airplane without knowing how to fly ... The balance of the article certainly doesn't support that theory.

As a long time resident of ZBB(a/craft there for 14years)the security issues are nil.Field fenced in,gate etc.The only vehicle allowed is airport truck.Transport Canada did a safety 'audit' last year due to the Traffic circuit congestion...Split freq's for better control. This accident simply case of 'new' pilot, renting a/craft,heavy load sightseeing-all norm!!

That's about what I figured. No doubt Boundary Bay has a few minor problems (like everywhere else), but there is no apparent reason to suspect that those contributed to the accident.

As a low-time pilot (ca. 200 hours), I would not feel comfortable loading up a C-172 with three buddies and blasting off; not without doing some pretty careful W&B calculations, anyway. Sounds like this guy was just out of his depth.
