Private operating certificate

hi,

One of my friend is planning to buy a private jet (more than 6 seats), use it only for himself/family and he want me to fly it for him as captain. I was looking for informations and it seems that you absolutely need a Private operating certificate. Is that right?

In this case I would need to act as DFO and CP... How long is the process? I understand I will have to produce some procedures (which I can take in the POH or from another operator). I have a valid ATPL. Me and the FO will get the type rating.

Any help? thanx

Hi arvida,

Here is a link to get you started. Most of what you'll need is there. A consultant from your region can probably help better. Everything you'll find after the link comes from my experience with commercial AOC's (703, 704 and 705). I've had some, but not a lot, of exposure to 604.

OK. Under the revised CAR 604 regs and what you've provided, you'll probably need a POC. That's, of course, if you are not getting paid or otherwise getting reward for doing the flying. Always better to be safe than sorry, as some on PPRuNe and AvCanada can attest to.

Timeline...not quick. For a new POC/AOC Transport has, from memory, 120 days to process the application from when you submit. And that's everything put together - the COM, SOP, MEL (if applicable), Maintenance Manual or Maintenance Plan, etc. During that time you can sit the CP exam and do the interview. Anything they see that requires a correction can have up to 90 days after that for them to fix and review. When a previous company of mine applied for our 705 OC, it was about 300 days all up from decision to when we started training pilots. Almost a full year before we were flying the line. The 705 OC takes a lot more effort than a POC OC, but plan on at least 5 months - then you'll be happily surprised if it takes less, but not in the wind if it takes more.

Also, you can take 'acquire' a manual from someone else, but you'll have to update it for your company. Case in point and IIRC, when Air Canada moved the Embraers over to Sky Regional they tried moving the manuals too...TC did not like that and the rollout was delayed...among other things. Therefore, different OC = different manuals. This is probably the biggest area where TC catches stuff because everyone wants an OC tomorrow. Take your time. An extra week and a third read of all your manuals. It can, and has in my experience, resulted in a far fewer findings and a far, far easier process.

Oh yeah, before you get the Type Ratings and PCC or PPC, as applicable, all your manuals will have to be approved and, typically, OC in hand. Don't waste the money because a type rating does nothing for you from an organizational standpoint...it's the PCC or PPC that seals the deal.

That's all I can think of right now. I know a couple of guys on here have their own companies so can probably give you extra info that I'm not aware of.
