Over 40 Medical Fees
How does everyone feel about the fact that a pilot over 40 has to pay almost twice as much as a pilot under 40 for a Class I medical?
I have had the pleasure (sic) of paying TC $55.00 every 6 months for the past couple of years with no difference in service. I pay on average $100.00 per medical + the $55.00 every 6 months which equals $310.00 per year while my under 40 peers pay about $100.00 for the medical + $70.00 equaling $170.00 per year. What gives?
How can we convince TC to correct this inequity? Perhaps a mass refusal to pay. You may be thinking that this is not the way to go because TC will just debit your tax account. Quite true if it were just one or two people. However, I think if it were all of the many thousands of over 40 Class I medical holders then I think they might take notice.

It really sucks!
Constitutionally speaking I don't know how they can get away with it . We are being unfairly penalized because of our age.
If it were any group , other than pilots it would not be allowed.It is placing a sector of the population at a disadvantage because of AGE. IT IS AGE DISCRIMINATION!
Canadians are an apathetic lot and Canadian Pilots are Apathy^ (squared).
I wonder if any of our non canadian bretheren are thusly treated in their country of origin ?

Offshore, great handle BTW, yer getting ripped off. The max they can charge for the medical is $75.00. 'Course, if you include the ECG...anyway I claim the whole thing as a tax deduction and so far they've accepted it.
Luftwaffle, they call it a "charge for processing of medical certificate" so I guess that makes it an expensive data entry, as you say.

When you claim you medical and licence fees, do you claim it as a) other employment expenses or b) professional fees /dues ?
I claim it as other employment expenses but my taxes are always so f^&8ed up I'm not sure if they have allowed it or not.

You must be under 40 because the $75.00 rule only applies to those under 40. Over 40 you pay the $55.00 AIP fee every 6 months. These are the cold hard facts.
As for tax deductions, the $75.00 you claim may get you all of about $00.01 in tax reduction as the more you earn the less you can claim in Medical expenses.
The AIP fee cannot be claimed as a Professional or Other Fee only a medical expense.

$75.00 every six months, plus $12.50 for the ECG once a year at the local hospital. Company used to pay for it. I don't know how much it's worth as a tax deduction, but $0.10 in my pocket is better than $0.10 in the Cretin's pocket.
IHL, no I never flew tankers, but one of my first jobs when I started flying commercially back in the 60's, was crewman on the Canso.
That's the pigboat bit.
