CX interviews

I think you'll see a fair bit of hiring at Cx as they continue to expand in the rising economy in Asia. Now's a good time to be getting in(I hope) but from what I hear, they only hire Canucks cuz they have to. Seems some military Canucks are the ones that have instigated these 'union' talks, (although we know there aren't any unions in China) and I guess that gives Canadians a bad name. That being said, I think if u know anyone working at Cx it is a BIG help in getting noticed. Once you get the package back from CX read it and fill it all out, send it off as soon as you can. Then phone Tony Penny to se if he got it. Just like when u were hunting for your first jobs here in The GWN, they like keeners.

CX has approx 10000 resumes on file, some how you have to get yours on top. It's that simple. Then get the book on how to pass your Cathay interview, read it and know all the answers, smooze a little and presto you're in. But remember Hong Kong on a second officer's salary is not a joy ride.
The "they don't hire Canadian's anymore" theory is just a myth.

Well guys, I've finished the interview process and have to say it was alot more effort and stress than I ever could have guessed. HK is a cool place and would suggest that if you go, go out and get pissed downtown cuz it was a HOOT! I (we) find out next week if we got jobs. Check this space for updates...

Hi Jumbo,
The 74F guys are all on a base, but if you join Cx pax, you must live in HK for quite a while (5years i think), depending on base availability. R u a jumbo driver?
Freighter guys are based all over the world. Not sure where. Sorry I can't be more help.

egt and I were in HK at the same time. Get your applications in soon, when they call you for the first, they may not give you much time. I had 6 days to prepare! I Live a long way from YVR too. If you're serious about CX, have your resource materials, including "Handling the Big Jets", and "How to pass your CX Interview" already.
The interview process for CX and CXF are different. I believe you must have some jet time if you expect to get on to CXF as F/O. For CX, expect to live in HK for AT LEAST 5 years, probably longer. I heard the overseas bases like YVR and LAX are close to full, there may not be and more spots by the time you get there. In other words, don't plan to "put up" with HK for 5 years to get a basing in North America, plan to be in HK for a while. The interviewers said it would be 18 months S/O before going to JF/O, but some S/O's there already said that's optimistic, more like 2 to 2.5 years. 18 months could be true, however, if CX does get all the new 340's they said they would.
The 2nd interview is fun, but intensive. Know your big jet theory and systems. If you're really serious, rent some time on a DC-10 or similar heavy sim, if you have no clue about heavy jets like me. You meet so many great folks at CX in the space of a few days, it is truly amazing. Every CX pilot I met was very friendly, truly a great bunch. Even the Flight Atendants were genuinely friendly, the donestic carriers here really could learn a thing or three about CX service. Know the pilot/management problems that are happening, too, I was actually asked that question! Every CX pilot said basically the same thing: there are problems, but they still love their job.

Well guys and gals,
It seems I have eluded death and poverty one more time in my seemingly charmed life, as I have managed to get a job at CX!!
Woo Hoo!
I'm guessing there is fair amount of emphasis on the sim as mine went ~soso at first, but got much better as we went on. Must go but...
Stay tuned for more later

tips?
be keen, keen, keen. Never hurts to have an inside reference either. Pay stands at ~$70000 cad. experience - just over 3000 hours, been flying a lear for the last year. But there were guys with 1200 - 1500 hours at the int. as well. Just keep applying, but you really ahve to want to live in HK. I think they can see right thru people that don't.
G'luck!!

Congratulations to all who've been hired!
I would like to point out that there are a number of serious issues regarding employment in HKG and particularly for CX.
I strongly suggest you check out the Fragrant Harbour section of PPRUNE. Most comments do reflect the reality at CX dispite management attempts to introduce their views. In any event it is a very different work environment so keep the following in mind:
-HKG is a very very very expensive place to work.
-Do not expect to be given the contract you were promissed (all clauses are changeable at the company's discretion).
-There is effetively no overtime, DT or standby pay and guys are now working 85 to 90 hours a month with 7 to 8 days off a month.
_You'll have no control over your roster.
-Most of the relief pilots on the 400 have had a 3 weeks of leave cancelled due to crew shortages.
For EGT, what is wrong with organising labour. You comments certainly makes you out to be somewhat industrially naive. More over, the HKAOA, the CX pilots association, has existed for many years. Canadians do not control the union's chosen course, it's entire membership which does through a democratic vote. Make no mistake, when you work in a place where the labor laws are writen by and for employers, you NEED a strong union!
Good luck to all but please, be informed and visit the Fragrant "Harbour Forum". This is not the place it used to be, the good old days are only rumour?

Dear Jkden,
I agree with what you said Sir, I was there in late July and the expats I met are really great, humourous and nice guys.
This is especailly on the cockpit visits as well, there was a Canadian SFO on this flight, ex-Canadian airforce.
By all means, get in.
Good Luck !

Just sent in the application package last week and I was just wondering for all of those who got interviewed...how long did the process take-from when you sent in your application until they called you for your first interview? Presently instructing with 1200 TT (150 multi). In your opinion-what are my chances? Many thanks.

I have just finished the whole process and i'm waiting for an answer. They probably wont look at you unless you have more time, prticularly twin time. You'll need to perform very well in the 747-200 sim ex. You will also have to do well in the medical and the interview. The medical is unreasonably difficult and even if you pass it doesn't mean you get in. Good Luck!

I have got a couple of questions for you if you are interested in helping me out...if you have got the time please email me.
