Flight Attendant Movie

I've seen this film and it's really worth a view. "The Aviary" is a very cool movie which was written and produced by a flight attendant. In my opinion, it portrays the flight attendant (and pilot) world in a way that hasn't been done before.

You can watch the trailer, meet the cast, read about the flight attendant, listen to the soundtrack :

The Aviary Movie

I don't normally buy DVDs but I thought, heck it's another FA I'll support it. I was not at all dissapointed (and I've watched it six times).

Enjoy!

Does the DVD work on UK DVD players? I notice the International version is still in NTSC format.

Hi Guys

I also have the DVD and yes it does work on UK players its a really good film - well if your a FA that is it might bore the pants off everyone else - Have you also seen the film "View from the Top" ? - This is a trashy one but fun to watch...

It's funny. I figured it would bore the pants off of non-aviation people too but my niece (20) and a bunch of her friends(3 guys, two girls) were over last night and my wife put the film on (she's an FA for Air France and was the reason I ordered the film in the first place) and they were all fascinated. I think all the little things cabin crew and pilots do really interest "ground people." She even asked to borrow it.
Oh, and I am in Th UK as well and it works on my DVD player (which is dual) and both of my computers.

My wife loved the film too, by the way, although I did notice that while my niece and her friends laughed a lot my wife laughed and often nodded in agreement and actually cried once. (she had just gotten of a trip, probably very tiredLOL).

I've seen it too. Very well done. Much better than "View from the top" which was terrible and dishonest from the first scene on. The Aviary is very honest and good.

Oh, and I played mine on the DVD player in Australia no prob.

Thanks for the heads up! THis is just the kind of "insiders" info I was looking for when I joined. I just ordered the DVD. I'll follow-up when I've watched it. Thanks again for the tip!

Just seen the movie.

Stiff acting. Unrealistic scenes I mean how many of us go to a bar or a party in our uniforms??? Also in a apartment share of 4 people what are the chances they are all going to be on standby at the same time!!! All sat at home in their uniforms waiting for the phone to ring to be given trips!!!

The Aviary

God, I totally disagree. I just watched it and really liked it. I thought the acting was really good. I had also read her blog on the website and read about why she shows crew in uniform and when. It was an intentional stylistic choice and I thought It really worked. I also really liked the twist at the end.

I enjoyed this film from start to finish and am really impressed with the FA who made it. Right on!

I'm with you Dante. I'm glad that we didn't have to identify who is crew, who isn't in every public scene. I prefer just seeing who is in uniform. I really liked the acting too. You can't please everyone I suppose.:O

OzzieO 7th Jul 2005 22:21

Thas right Jason you can't!!

barrythecat 8th Jul 2005 06:43

I'm with Ozzie on this....I bought the film for my wife, who is cabin crew and thought I might enjoy it aswell, since I am in the industry (aviation that is, not making films).
Sorry to say it was complete pony from beginning to end. I am very surprised that any self respecting CCM would think that this film is an acurrate portrayal of life as a hostie!!:{
Do you REALLY live in your uniforms?? sit on standby with them on!?! Go to bars and even funerals wearing them?? Please...!
One word sums it up....cringetastic!:yuk:
The acting was straight from "prisoner cell block H"
save yourselves a couple of quid and an hour or so of your lives.
Give this a wide birth!
Incidently if anyone wants my wife's copy its on E-bay:O

Man, I think that's a bit of a harsh review. As a cabin crew member myself, I can say that I really enjoyed the film. This is not a documentary nor does it seem to be trying to be. I think the CCM who made this captured the spirit of the lifestyle in a way that hasn't been done before. Perhaps you may disagree with some of the stylistic choices she made but you have to admit that it's a valliant effort on her part. Not to mention, I am a bit surprised that if your wife is cabin crew you wouldn't see that and give at the very least a more tasteful review. The number one thing that CCM are known for is supporting eachother. If you don't like the movie - no biggie- but don't ruin it for the rest of us who are enjoying the efforts and talent of our fellow crew member that made it.

OzzieO 9th Jul 2005 18:36

By expressing an opinion about a film how exactly does that ruin it for everyone???

Also I appreciate that it is not a documentary however does it not have to be a bit realistic???

I think everyone should be able to express their opinions. I think there is a way of doing it without trashing it completely. There are a lot of very realistic things in this film that set it aside from films like View from the top. Iguess I was just surprised that the husband of an FA would just destroy the movie without pointing out anything good about the film and by basically telling people not to buy it. That is clearly going beyond a bad review. Anyway, I have at least ten Cabin crew friends who bought and loved the movie. I guess we are all crazy LOL.

OzzieO 9th Jul 2005 21:04

DD Of course we are all crazy we are cabin crew after all!!!! Thats the one quality we all share!;)

OO :You're so right! We are a strange bunch. Another thing we all share is the support for eachother, even when debates get heated we all repect eachother which is why I will probably never quit this profession. Fly safe!

The Aviary

Right on DD. That's exactly why I posted it. Fa's sticking together is my favorite part of the job.

Trislander 12th Jul 2005 13:57

Jus borrowed this from a friend at work, gonna watch it tonight and let you know what i think. My friend says he thought it wasn't anything brilliant, but then he preferred a view from the top which i didn't think was that brilliant, so I might actually like it. Who knows, watch this thread!

:ok:

barrythecat 14th Jul 2005 09:43

DD- Opinions vary, as they say. I am entitled to mine which has been clearly stated. My wife as I said previously is a CCM, as is my sister and my Dear old Dad was a Captain all for the same company. Over the years I have been fortunate enough to accompany each of them on trips, often on jump seats and stay with them and their crews down route. I can honestly say that in all my experiences I have never come across anything close to what this film claims as "the life of a CCM".
I find it surprising that you would champion a film that portrays people in your profession as bimbos single mindedly chasing flight deck. I think CCM's deserve more that this cheap attempt at entertainment.

DanteDepaula 14th Jul 2005 17:53

Again, I totally respect your opinion. My feeling is this - there are so many different types of flight attendants. I have flown with such a huge range of people that I would have a difficult time saying "Flight attendants are like this________."

I think my affection for "The Aviary" is in the fact that the people living in the house are all so different. I agree that the character, Portia, is a bit of a fluff but the other two women certainly are not (in my opinion). On my very last commute, one of the flight attendants showed off her ring to me. She had just become engaged to a first officer the night before. She then told me that she would be quitting her job as an FA in the next month. I didn't pass judgement on her for that. I feel that "The Aviary" does the same thing. Comments on the life of the flight attendants without passing judgement.

I also am a huge fan of the anonymity theme and the sometimes very lonely life of a flight attendant.

I guess, to be expected, my experience as an FA might be different than yours. I really related to this film. I guess some people won't , we are all different and that is part of why I love the job.

I think it's fair to say that some FA's will identify with it and some will not. I'm one who did.:D
