I've been told by BA recruitment that I cannot join the July LGW training course, although there is still space available and my criminal checks are done, since my referees are overseas and the paperwork for the ID would not be processed in time (11 weeks guys!! Bloody hell! What about recruiting few more staff for your H.R./Admin office uh?)... ah la la! :( Never mind... I'll find a way to survive another 3 months with my 900£ left...:{

Hi guys, I was recently offered a job with BA (GATWICK). I've now changed it and awaiting a course for LHR. I know you've all probably been asked all there Qs before, but would be helpful if you could answer them for me.

1)Average takehome at LHR Shorthaul?
2)Many days off?
3)As i'll be new will I get all the crap flights that crew don't want to do? I know you have a bidding system. How does this work?
4)Are there opportunities to do loads of night stops?

Don't worry! I'll help you out...I'm an Australian that's recently joined BA short haul, so I'm not into Ascot and such! :)

1. Not too sure about average take home exactly, but for the first two months it's tough cause you don't get paid any allowences, but once the allowences come in, it's REALLY good, plus with over time you can take home anywhere from 1200 per month to 1900, I've even heard of people taking home over two grand. Maybe an average to be on the safe side would be about 1500, but since I've gotten my allowences mine have all been over that.

2. You have to get rostered 10 days a month off, but you usually get more, cause sometimes they non op you on available days, which means you don't have to go into work, but you can also do less days off than that if you do overtime. Depends on what you want to do.

3. You definately won't be getting the crap flights. All my rosters apart from my first one which I didnt bid for have been out of this world!!! I'm off to Larnaca tomorrow, positioning out, one sector back late the next day, then I've got 2 three day trips to finish the month all only 6 sectors, and I position out again in one of them. It really has been fantastic! The whole month I've only done 3 there and backs, the rest have been trips.

4. As I said above, there's plenty of opportunities to do nightstops. I mainly only do nightstops, it's all in the way you bid and what your priorities are. :)

I was crew for B.A. Eurofleet LHR in '97 & '98 & to be honest, I don't think I ever took home more than about £1400 per month for the whole time I was there! I wasn't exactly 'quiet' for that amount of money either! I worked bloody hard at B.A. for the money I got, yes I did get 'trips' away & I did do quite alot of u.k. domestic work aswell as european stuff too. I'm sure some people will have you believe that it's fantastic, & I'm sure it is, but anyone who is (apparantly) bringing home that amount of money, will be working extremely hard for it & probably hasn't got alot of life too, I shouldn't wonder!

Hi crew36, I'm in your same situation with BA. I've also been offered LHR but I live around LGW so I'm faced with the same dilema...

You will find more info about LHR/LGW on the big BA topic as I have posted a message re this just few days ago and there are a couple of interesting replies there.

I've been told during the interview that the bidding system in Eurofleet is NOT by seniority, no matter which base you chose: sometime you will get everything you request, sometime nothing at all. It's all computerized therefore "it should be fair"...

I understand there is no way at the mo' to go from LGW Eurofleet to WW fleet. It seems every crew need to go through LHR Eurofleet before joining WW. (see Tilly's message on the BA thread) so if you are interested in Long-Haul you've done the right thing. (But she said things may change).

I've been told by friends in BA that LHR crew have better trips than LGW crew. Don't know if it's because of the destinations or the aircraft type but I'm aware that there are less nightstops from LGW because BA is in competition with Easyjet on certain routes, offering more flights therefore returning to base more often. Don't know about the money but we've been told during the interview to expect a basic of £9000 p.a. plus around 400-500£ per month in F.D.A. - it wasn't mentioned if there are differences between LGW and LHR. Did they tell you differently?

Finally, last time I spoke to BA H.R., I was told there is a course starting in LHR around mid august.

If you have been offered eurofleet up at LHR, take it. I have friends living in LGW and they bid for trips, thus making it possible to commute.
Also, better pay than LGW.

Officially, you do have to be within two hours of the airport at which you're based. This is more a CAA regulation than an airline regualation, as it's suggested that having to travel any more than two hours to your base would mean you are too tired to perform effectively in the event of an emergency.

This rule is, however, largely ignored.

Commuting to Eurofleet at either Heathrow or at Gatwick is difficult. I commute to LongHaul and spend my flights from Aberdeen chatting away to some of the crew members. I do come across a few who commute who say it's OK, but as you can often get there-and-back trips on the same day, you might find yourself commuting two or three times a week in each direction (really don't know enough about the EF rosters).

I know one girl who commutes to LGWEF from BCN and she says she manages just fine.

If I were you, I'd give it a go. You'll kick yourself down the line if you didn't try it for a while.

Yup, monthly take home at EF LHR providing you have flights on your roster and at what times they are, between £1,000 and £2,000 if you are lucky. Average annual salary at an estimate is £18-22k. You get bar commission too, which can boost it a little. It really varies on what your roster looks like but there is no favouritism.

Annual leave works on seniority and rotation, but you can bid for certain trips, overtime and days off. The system is computerised to ensure it is fair and legal!

BA have the fairest system I have come accross so far.

Best of luck wherever you end up based, and bring plenty of redbull to your training!!!!

I have been in the hold pool for long haul and I have received a letter stating that no new entrants would be offered long haul contracts.
With EF LHR would it be cost effective if you live over 100 miles away if you were requesting the 2 and 3 day trip, does anybody out there do it ?
Is there a maximum amount of 2 and 3 day trips you can request in one roster ? and if so would they be guaranteed ?
Would you realistically be taking over 1,500 a month ?
Roughly how long do you think it would take to be transfered over to long haul ?

Any answers.

That's it! It is official now, there are no more courses for EFL Gatwick for the next 6 months at least! (12th of July's course being the last).

If you are waiting for a phone call from a recruiter to confirm a course, I suggest you contact BA yourself and consider relocating to LHR, otherwise you may as well be waiting until next year!! :{

FYI, next courses ex LHR are:

- 23rd August : full
- 6th September : few spaces left
- 23rd September : open

Not only the interview is ****e... it doesn't even guarantee you a starting date!! This industry is crap! :yuk:

Honey, I am SURE there are another 2 courses for LGW eurofleet in July after mine (12th of july). They are probably full.

As for my experience, with BA not only you have to be good enough to pass the application selection process, pass the interview, get offered a job....but you also have to chase them up all the time!!! What they did to you was APPALLING!! Such a company like BA!!! They should AT LEAST have phoned you to inform you of the above, NOT waited for you to chase them!!!

They have admitted to me over the phone that at the recruitment office they are overwhelmed by the amount of work they have to do...and they are under-staffed as well!
So they are late in sending out contracts, start dates, first steps to excellence books and medical questionnaire....and the disclosure scotland appilcation forms!!!!
But to be fair once everything is ok and they start asking for referemnces etc they're quite quick and keen. It was a big relief for me.

If I were you I would ask them to be short-listed for any of the LGW EF courses in July.....there will SURELY be somebody who pulls out at the last minute or that cannot be admitted because they don't have all their references yet.

Try it honey.
Even if they do have problems, they're for sure the best company to work for.

Can't risk hun! LGW is not a certainty and no, it is not possible to joing any course in July.

So I've accepted LHR and I'm starting late August. They said my contract will be in the mail in a couple of days.

Funny though, they couldn't tell me which aircraft types I'll be trained on... :uhoh:

LHR EF you'll be trained on the A320, A319, B757-200 and B767-300.

EF LHR will work out well for you, I am sure. The pay is better and you get a chance to apply for WW after few years if that's what you want.
Take care and read the contract inside out when you receive it....
Though to be fair it's the best contract I've ever seen in my whole life... (it's the same contract for both LHR and LGW).

Shame you couldn't make it for the 12th july...we would have had fun, I am sure.

Brief question which I think I may already know the answer to, but nevertheless, no harm in asking:

Would love to apply to BA, however I don't have 2 years' work experience. I graduated in June 2003, and started working as cabin crew for a low-cost carrier later that year. Although I enjoy working for my present airline, I wouldn't mind exploring other possibilities at this stage. Should I bother applying if I don't have at least 2 years' worth of customer service experience? (at best, I think I only have about 1 years' worth!)
