QF to axe 2500, if we go to war
I heard that Qantas will be axeing 2500 positions should the war go ahead, can anyone with inside info from QF confirm that for me? It looks like we might be heading for another September 11th with kaos in the aviation industry, should a war happen. Job losses. I really hope for everyone that the war does not happen, because should the war happen, we will be waiting longer to try and land our dream jobs of becoming cabin crew.
After alittle investigation i managed to find this ad in the SMH.
Qantas to sack 2,500 if war breaks out: union
February 19 2003
Unions today accused Qantas of leaking a plan to sack 2,500 workers if war breaks out with Iraq to boost its share price ahead of tomorrow's half-yearly profit results.
The Australian Services Union (ASU) and Transport Workers Union (TWU) were seeking urgent meetings with the airline today amid reports of the plan to shed staff and cut labour costs.
A spokeswoman for Qantas refused to confirm the reports and said executives would be happy to field questions on the matter at tomorrow's profit announcement.
News reports detailed the retrenchment plan as analysts revealed they expected the airline to announce its half-yearly profit had doubled.
ASU assistant national secretary Linda White said Qantas had not discussed the plan with unions and she accused the airline of trying to boost ots share price.

"Exactly to the day two years ago, they did exactly the same thing," Ms White told AAP.
"They announced 2,000 jobs were going to go, boost the share price, everyone looks like a hero and it's absolutely outrageous.
"Of course there will be an effect from the Iraq war, of course there will some effect but job losses are not the first way to go."
The ASU represents 10,500 ground staff, while the TWU represents baggage handlers and caterers.
Ms White said Qantas would likely bounce back from a war with Iraq as it did after the 1991 Gulf War and the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States.
"We've put in urgent calls to hear from them," she said.
"We're pretty outraged by this.
"Frankly, what the hell are they spending $500 million on Air New Zealand for? We're going to save 8,500 New Zealand jobs and sack 2,500 Australians."
Ms White said unions were not consulted about the plan.
"There has been nothing prior to this announcement, nothing that's been sent to staff that they were planning this," she said.
"There's a multitude of other things you can do before you sack people."
War on Iraq is predicted to cause a downturn in international travel of up to 20 per cent.

Who knows what QF are up to. There is a huge over-supply of short haul flight attendants with lots of options available at the moment including leave, part-time etc. Long Haul are having a stop work meeting on Tuesday and QF is using the war to reduce staff numbers and costs.
For those of you who just received your wait list letters who knows what all this will mean lets hope you get a call up BUT not at the expense of existing crew trying to secure a future for themselves and future crew.
For accurate information on the Long Haul crew position visit their website on www.faaa.net

I just came across this article on Susie - it's in today's Syd Morning Herald.
Susie Maroney believes she'll be remembered as "crazy" after today announcing her retirement from long distance swimming, saying the death of her twin brother Sean eight months ago was a major factor in her decision to quit.
"It's always hard to do a swim without Sean - especially (him) being on the boat because marathon swimming is such a lonely sport," Maroney, 28, said today.
Maroney, no stranger to fame or controversy in her swimming life, has set her sights on a career as an airline steward and has been shortlisted by Qantas for such a position.
She will wind up her swimming career on Sunday with a five-hour, 20 kilometre swim from the Sydney Opera House to Manly, where she will officially open the redeveloped wharf.

Suzie Moroney?
Is Suzie Moroney a Flight Attendant? When did this happen? Did she have to apply like every other flight attendant wannabe has too, or did she go straight through to the Medical and security checks?
Does she fly short haul, or because she is a long distance swimmer she gets to go Long Haul

Hello
Just thought I'd share some thoughts about the QF job loss situation - if it does come to that.
Will QF really need to axe that many jobs if we go to war?
I read that if war does break out it will most likely bring about the (total) collapse of United Airlines. I suppose in this sort of event QF would add extra flights to LAX. This would maybe balance out the loss of QF passengers on European and Asian routes.
Also, if QF had to axe jobs wouldn't they release their overseas based crew first before Australian-based crew? Isn't there about 360 crew based overseas?
Cheers
