Austin Brown - some sad news

It is with deepest regret that I am writing to tell you of the passing of Austin J Brown on Sunday 11 May 2014.
Austin was a former DC-3 and Viscount pilot with Cambrian Airways and British Virgin Island Airways as well as an accomplished aviation photographer.

Despite appearing well, Aussi went for a walk in Cabopino (a beautiful small port on the coast of Southern Spain) but collapsed on the pavement just before midday.
Some people around immediately tried CPR and called an ambulance. When the ambulance arrived the paramedics did everything they could but to no avail.

A funeral service is planned for 2pm on Friday 23rd May 2014 at Marlow Methodist Church, Spittal Street, Marlow, Buckinghamshire SL7 3HJ and afterwards at White Waltham Aerodrome - West London Aero Club clubhouse, near Maidenhead, Berkshire SL6 3NJ. All friends are very welcome.

The family have requested no flowers but donations can be made to a memorial fund to be set up which will go towards a good cause in Austin's name.

To contact Austin's family (son Nick, daughters Susannah & Tamsin) please email:

Please forward this info to anyone you feel would want to know.

Austin J Brown r.i.p.

It made me reeling of shock when I found the email in my inbox this morning. I remember AJB well. Years before he set up the Photo Service he offered his aviation (b/w) negs by monthly newsletter and I bought regularly from him, myself being a very young, aspiring aviation photographer during those early-1970s.
We met a few times when I worked (my first job) at Amsterdam's Schiphol IAP and he flew the Cessna Titan for Air Westward.
We lost touch when he flew in the Caribbean for Air BVI.
A few years ago we got back in touch, he lived in Marbella Spain then, with his dog. Divorced, his kids on other continents, AJB was trying to bring his huge photo collection under wider attention and I believe he also made it fairly recent to becoming a Getty contributor / photographer.
While a few serious setbacks happened to him (a fire and damage to his main tool, the his expensive Nikon dslr) he always remained 'stiff upper lip' and a solid good sport.
He won't be forgotten, r.i.p. AJB.
