With women generally weighing 30 to 45 pounds less than males and it costing about 3 rupees ($0.05) per hour per extra pound to fly, the airline expects to save up to 30 million rupees (around $500 million) each year in fuel through the new hiring practice.

The airline could put an overweight cess on the CC, rather than firing them for being male. We all know that the real reason is because the pax prefer airlines with female CC but the labour laws prevent the airline from saying that out loud.

It is probably well that this is a local airline. Were they to expand operations to china, some of their savings might need to go into ensuring that their CC have substantial martial arts training.

A British businessman on board a Hong Kong Airlines flight recently described how an elderly passenger lost it when the plane was delayed for six hours at Sanya Airport in Hainan province.
"He went completely mental and stormed up the plane and into the business class. I heard a punch and looked up and he was attacking the stewardess," Graham Fewkes told the South China Morning Post in March.
"What surprised me was that passengers were applauding as the man was hitting her.”
Hong Kong Airlines is training its crews to be prepared for such incidents.
Since 2011, the carrier has included a class on Wing Chun – a martial art -- as part of the basic training courses for all of its flight attendants
