Health tips

Hi. I thought maybe we could start a thread for sharing our tips on coping with jet lag, tiredness, stress and other work health issues?

Can I start by saying I have just started putting lavender oil - essential oil - on my wrists morning and at bed time. I really do find it helps me relax.

And I read the other day that cherry juice can help our body make the hormone associated with getting to sleep, helping jet lag and insomnia.

I would love to any health tips from the other shift workers here!

I work for a short-haul airline, so don't much suffer from jetlag, but we do frequent transitions (early to late then back to earlies after days off). I have found that trying to eat at regular times of the day helps my sleeping clock stay in harmony too, so no midnight dinners and late snacks really helped.

Having a bedtime routine also helps falling asleep "too early". For waking up early, you can now get one of these light alarm clocks that imitate the colours of the rising sun and come on gradually. I have not tried it myself but it sounds like a good idea. I wonder if there might be something on the market doing the opposite; a light source that slowly goes out, giving the impression that the sun is setting.

It's all about the colour composition of the light we are exposed to apparently, light with more blue component (like that of the early morning sun) wakes us up in a refreshing way, while white light (computers, office lighting or indeed aircraft lights) over-stinulate the eyes and brain, making us more tired.

And bringing home made food to work instead of crewfood helos stay healthier on the long run. Airline food tends to be full of salt, fat and zero nutrition.

Having been doing long-haul for 4 years at an 24/7 airport base i feel your pain! I have a few tips ive picked up along the way which really help. I discovered an amazing herbal sleeping supplement (there are 100's available and Ive tried most) called 'Sleep More.' Why it works so much better than all the rest is that it has Kava in it, a root herb from Fiji that relaxes the muscles and has a sedative action and really makes u fall off to sleep fast. (i would avoid melatonin as it screws with your hormones and no long term studies have been conducted. And as mentioned in the above post, i really do believe in a bedtime 'ritual' (eg reading, relaxing music etc) that you stick to, as it helps signal to your body its time to sleep. And a no-brainer which sounds simple but really works- cut out caffeine and alcohol during the day to improve sleep quality.....which I know alot of CC are guilty of over doing due to our hectic schedules. In terms of our work environment....we are exposed to higher levels of radiation, fumes, and ozone in the atmosphere that causes oxidation and inflammtory stress in the body. I have been using Brazilian Acai Berry powder as a supplement for many years for its ability to neutralise inflammation in the body and it is one of the strongest anti-oxidants available to protect from radiation. Plus has strong anti-aging properties, and an energy booster to boot. Give it a go!
I have had positive results with my sleep from exercising during the day. just dont exercise at night as it will raise your metabolism and heart rate and actually stop you from sleeping! I guess everyone is different and some things will work and others wont. Goodluck I hope this helps!
