Commute to the airport?

Just wondering, how long is everybodies commute to and from the airport from their homes?

What would you say is the maximum realistic commute time in terms of if you're going to be too tired to drive after a really long day?

I know most airlies say 90 mins for the standby reasons, but what is realistic and what isnt?

I was long haul crew in my previous CC job & i used to commute 3 hours & then operate a 11 - 12.5 hour flight. Did it for 3 years & never missed a flight or encountered any problems During standby duties i would stay with friends in the area overnight or just drive down, relax in the crew room then go back home again afterwards. I know some crew used to drive half way or so & then sit at a motorway service station but i always used to drive the whole way, just personal preference i guess.

Most people at my old airline were commuters. If i went back to a UK based CC job (i'm UAE based CC these days) i would most likely opt to commute again. I loved my job so driving for 3 hours every 4 or 5 days never really bothered me.

Oh I see! Thats good to hear actually, so me planning to commute about an hour to an hour and a half depending on traffic shouldn't be something to put me off then? Or make me reluctantly relocate?

My drive is around two hours one way but I only have to go LHR four times a month at the most which makes it fine. Whenever I do standby, and have two hours notice, I either drive halfway (although boring as it is) or stay at home if it's reported to be quiet.

How often will you be driving to work? If it's only a couple of times a month I wouldn't hestitate at all as you wouldn't have to relocate. If it's several times a week I would say it's a different story as you probably would be spending more time at work and on the roads instead at home.

Well I would be doing short haul at first, so im lookin at 4/5 on and 3/5 off or whatever.

Im very used to travelling and being on the road, as well as long shifts in my current job and education so it doesnt daunt me or anything like that, just wondering if its worth it - its what I have always wanted to do; plus it would be sooo much cheaper for me to stay where I am as opposed to moving!

I just read your post and was wondering if you worked for Etihad? I have just started training with them, and was wondering if its do-able to live in Dubai? I would probably stay in Abu Dhabi for some standbys, but just wondering if anybody lives in Dubai and works for Etihad, and has no problems doing this

There are rules about living in DXB whilst working for a company based in AUH & i'm not 100% sure on them. I think it boils down to if you are married & your partner works in DXB then you can too. If not then i think you are expected to live in AUH. I've met crew who live there & they are all married.

Best to speak to someone in the office about this if you can though as i live in one of the company apartments & have never enquired about a move anywhere. Also search this site as i remember someone recently posting information about this, possibly in the wannabes section.
