What's your Airline policy on Crew Luggage...

Hello All,

I'm just popped to the other side of the Flight deck door to do a straw pole on the policies of various airlines regarding Crew (both Flight and Cabin) luggage.

There has been an increasing trend in the use of unsuitable/tatty or just plane Obese luggage at my company and I'm wondering how other airlines deal with it. When in ensemble when checking in for duty/to a hotel or positioning around, our luggage forms part of the overall impression we give off.
e.g. KLM, in particular, consider it part of the uniform.

So What does your airline do? If you could spare a few minutes to tell your tale using the headings below not forgetting to mention what airline you work for (if you prefer not to say then just give us some big clues )

Many thanks.

WoT

1. Does your company en-force roll-aboard luggage or allow crew to check-in bags?
2. Is your luggage company issued or purchased by yourself?
3. If purchased, what guidelines exist to determine what you buy? i.e. does the company specifiy what size/colour/type of case it should be.
4. Maintenance - does the company dictate how the case should appear/be used? i.e. no stickers, markings, must only be used on company business etc.
5. Weight limits?

So I'll start it off.....

Airline: TUI UK - Thomson Airways
1. Crew permitted to checkin in bags for any flight LH and SH depending on local procedures/ liquids limits etc. If containing less than 100ml can be brought on board through crew channel. Normally we surrender our bags at check-in for LH and carry-on board for SH/UK nightstop/tours.
2. Luggage is bought by the individual not company issued.
3. No guidelines are issued as to what you use as luggage. up to the individual
4. No Guidelines as to the upkeep or appearance of the case. The case is yours so you can use it as you please.
5. Weight limited to the UK baggage handling limit (32kg?? ) However crew baggage is accounted for as an average weight in the loadsheet.

Crew baggage

These are the BA 'rules' regarding crew baggage:
1- Crew permitted to check-in baggage on L/H flights only
2 - Baggage is bought by individual crew members, not BA issued
3 - Must be navy or black in colour, hardshell type (if checked into the hold). On S/H your wheelie doesnt have to be hardshell as goes in the aircraft cabin, no facility to check it in on S/H
4 - No stickers or markings other than BA crew tags
5 - Max weight 25kg

Qantas

1. We can have both roll-aboard and checked luggage for any flight.
2. Company issued, with the exception of suitcases. The number of crew using their own carry-on luggage is increasing due to the high empty weight of company-issued bags and poor quality of earlier models.
3. Needs to be black in appearance and business-like. No backpacks or duffel/sports bags. (However the only company-issued luggage for Tech Crew is a small black duffle bag - not used by many.)
4. All luggage must be in good condition - not tatty. Stickers on suitcases do not seem to be frowned upon - but give our 'managers' time. Company-issued bags must not be used outside company business. Commuters seem to get away with it - commonsense prevails. You still get crew who insist on using their company bags whilst on Leave. I could think of nothing worse.
5. Carry on must comply with the passenger allowance. Although small deviations are overlooked. Checked baggage cannot exceed 32kg. The company is getting tougher regarding crew transporting large amounts of luggage on inbound sectors.

Ek luggage rules

1 - We have a roll-aboard with us on all our flights, which we MUST take on board. On layover trips we also have a hard shell suitcase, which we check in.
2 - Our luggage is provided by the company, and it is regarded as part of our uniform.
3 - We cannot use our own luggage.
4 - The luggage should be in good repair, there should be no stickers or personal nicknacks on it, except for an approved name tag. I'm not aware of any guidelines regarding using it for personal travel.
5 - The weight limit is 30kgs, but we can bring a little more at the captains discretion.

Another BA, but LGW

The same as above, but we can check in bags for short haul as well as long haul, although we're adviced against checking in cases for Airbus trips.

Cases must be hard cover for long haul, can be soft casing on short haul although adviced that it will be more secure against damage when using a hard case.

Hope this clarifies.

I take one case that I was issued with back in the days when we were still allowed actual cases. Some crew take that and the little trolley bag, but I can fit everything in one big one. If you feel the need to take both, then take both, I don't think anyone will stop you.

The Last time I took two bags on a nightstop, I left one of them in the crew room and then had to go back, and in the hotel reception when checking out and again had to go back. Silly CherryCoke.
