Officially, not if they don't have to. If there is a seat in traveller available, you will be given it. If they need to upgrade, they will go with BA staff first.
If you're asking because of the MIA you previously mentioned, it will be a case of getting on and being grateful. That said, if the only available seats are WTP or CW and everyone with a higher priority has been accepted, you may be lucky.

I recently travelled BKK-SYD and got W. I was travelling with my nominsted companion, who does not even work for an airline. There were vacant seats in Y, not sure about J.

Then you're very fortunate. Usually, it is a battle to even get on out of BKK.
Believe me, I've seen plenty of staff travel injustice in my time. QF in J, BA in Y on BA metal. I had a CSD once actually have them swapped!
I'll reiterate, 'officially' we are not allowed to upgrade. If you have been lucky then good for you. I've been given middle seats in Y while there have been entire rows empty in W and J.

Does VS have a website like BA where you can list yourself?
My brother who's also cabin crew has told me that he has received upgradings on BA quite a few times. If there are empty seats, they'l fill'em up apearantly

Luckily I usually travel on a J priority ticket, but even when I have been on standby I have got club. Quite often when my dad travels on standby his IFE 'malfunctions' and he has to be upgraded. From my experience staff are looked after really well, which is how it should be.
Going to try for BKK in June, hopefully being outside of school holidays we might get some luck!

VS will only upgrade if the lower cabin is completely full. They will upgrade rev pax, usually frequent flyers, before non rev pax. I have never seen non VS staff in W, let alone J, but I'm sure it happens from time to time.
VS staff and companions will get upgraded to W automatically, subject to availability, but not to J, unless the entire Y and W cabins are full. VS staff over 3 years can get a limited number of J upgrades per year.
The only way to get a J upgrade with us is to know the Captain or the FSM.
No one else has any power.

Any airline that tries to get staff on by any means (whether through pax upgrades or staff upgrades) is at the top of my list if I do have to travel somewhere.
For that reason, it's worth avoiding those airlines that are known for not helping staff at all ... and there are a few ...
