Discrimination against a Visa holder in Cabin Crew requirements

I do want to comment on points made by ShesGreatintheGalley and cockney steve.
First what ShesGreatintheGalley is both racist and discriminative. BA ask for EU passports, that doens't MEAN ENGLISH. With that statement BA "could" have their entire workforce being German! If Lufthansa had a cabin full of irish girls (now being sexist) whats wrong with that? EU passport and everything, I think you should wake up and smell the EU regulations. This process of being convienent for the airline, I say again-does not mean it's legal.
Cockney steve your line stating, "In the same way a car-driving license will be accepted, a Goods or Public Service licence is not" is totally irrelevant. If for instance a car driving licence is required, the of course a goods or public service licence is not sufficient as the privilages are not the same, however the point I'm making is that while a EU passport is required, a UK visa has the same privilages as a EU passport.
The amount of people that spell licence "license" on here, makes me wonder how many of you have a EU passport and not an American

First off, calling it discrimination is a bit bloody melodramatic... But then, so is calling ShesGreat a sexist and racist... Simmer down Hour Builder - no need to attack the people who you've come to for help. Believe it or not, we don't make these policies.
Everyone has raised really valid reasons as to why this might be the case, and Hour Builder, without providing the in depth specifics that an exact answer to this question would require, I'd think you'd have gotten your answers!
Of course, wrong or right, it may just be that airlines policy. I double dare you to challenge that in the PRE-EMPLOYMENT stage, and if your wife even see's employment, I (and probably any other airline employee, or indeed employee of a large company with high interest from prospective employees) could predict the sort of treatment she would receive from fellow colleagues/immediate managers/upper management.

Hour Builder .... I have had some experience of interviewing in this industry over the years .....
The simple basic rules are that a (UK) employer should not in general discriminate on grounds of race/religious belief/sexuality/age.
They may (in general), however, make up any rule they want about other conditions they require (height etc). In some cases they can even ignore the apparent "legal" rules if there are special circumstances.
The example you are giving does not appear to break any of the rules.
They are required to be prepared to employ full EU citizens as there is the right to travel and employment for EU citizens within the EU.
As I understand it "American" is not a race/ethnic group as such (legally)... this can be confusing as for some countries being a national of that country might mean you are considered part of a race/ethnic group.
The explanation others have given regarding passport complications etc seem to be valid employer considerations to be applied or might be ... that doesn't mean that all employers might take that view.
I think the advice to try other airlines is good ... you'll quickly discover if that rule is applied generally and if not get an maybe get an oppurtunity elsewhere.
