Calling all full time Ansett Cabin Crew.....
I have applied for a casual position with Ansett domestic through Flight Force. I made it through all rounds and am now awaiting their decision. We were all told that Ansett was restructuring and would now and in the future only recruit casuals. If existing permanent staff resigned and they needed to recruit more full time they would do so only from this pool of casuals. Is this true? My biggest concern is that they can't guarantee minimum hours and that after the Olympics there may not be enough work for us. What do you guys think? They said it costs $10-15K to train every FA and that they wouldn't invest this kind of money if there wasn't going to be enough work for us. Any thoughts?

I used to fly for AN (now QF), and still have my best friends working for Ansett.... from what I have heard, their regional (Skywest) flight attendants have all been offered permanent full-time positions in Ansett, and they will be the last full-time positions available at Ansett for a long time. I believe they are trialling their new rostering system in MEL shortly and it requires about 200-300 casual f/a's in order for it to work !! They are not guarenteed any hours, and can be shifted from base to base at any time (but then again, so can we all !!).
At QF we also have casuals, both Long Haul and Short Haul....but not to the same degree. We only have about 30 casual in MEL, with no more to come at the moment. But the casuals I have flown with are getting heaps of work. Their only problem is that they have to reapply for full-time positions, and at this stage, go through the whole interview process again !!
As well as casuals, we have contract overseas based f/a's and they have now announced we will be getting some fixed-term contract Australian based f/a's on 6 month contracts later this year.
Unfortuantely casuals, contactors and fixed term f/a's are the way the industry is heading in Australia these days !!
The money for casuals is great ( providing they get plenty of hours)- you'll still earn a lot more than say Impulse or Virgin if you get the hours, but keep in mind there's no staff travel, no sick leave, annual leave, maternity leave etc, no seniority and no bidding for duties (you just get assigned work, with no say in what you do!!)
And Ansett's casuals are employed by Flight Force, not Ansett, so there's probably no hope of getting travel benefits etc as you are basically contractors from another company!
Hope this info helps !

I work for QF on a casual basis and get a lot of work, but am a bit tired of not having any of the benefits that go with the job, which is a shame because despite some negative publicity on this site, I really love it at QF, but I'm keeping my ear to the ground for future opportunities. I've already done the gulf so my options are a bit limited. Evacu8, where are the bases o/seas that you refer to within Ansett please. Are the people based overseas local citizens?

Cabinbunny,
My fingers are still crossed for you sweet..hang in there !
Ansett and Impulse f/a's are contracted to their respective airlines...The impulse girls are getting a shocking deal...no staff travel etc etc and alot of their pay is allocated in shares ! Their employer is air crews control , who is in the same business as flight force with the contracting of f/a's.
Evacu8 I am also with QF but not a f/a as yet..can you tell me what you heard about the 6 month contract ? I have heard nothing about that yet ! Keen to hear your gossip.
Cheers

Birds to Perches... I was referring to QF's o/seas bases (AN doesnt have any), we have overseas based f/a's in Japan, AKL and BKK and they are locals.
Cabinboy, it's on the QF Cabin Crew Website (a QF run website for passsing info onto crew) that we will have six-month contract f/a's employed to help with the opening of the new Long Haul bases, presumably they will come from the short list (there's still hundreds on the shortlist from what I hear). Not too sure if they will be offered fulltime employment after their contract expires....it's doubtful though, as the casuals we have were expecting to get any full-time jobs that were going, but we've just put through a ground course of full-timers last month, and none of the current casuals were given full-time positions !!
