What has gone wrong at Qantas ?

O.K. I will admit I am a Pom but I wonder if someone could tell me what really is the matter with Qantas. I have read loads of vitriol from pilots and cabin crew about the airline and I have seen enough in the Australian press to make the bravest PR expert want to curl up and resign. I can't quite make out whether the current safety problems are just bad luck or part of a deeper problem. Also the FAA stance is worrying. I have heard complaints about poor service from passengers and experienced a very lacklustre service myself (too many Thai staff in the Business cabin, no sense of management from the senior cabin crew member who stayed in his office for much of the flight and absolutely no Australian charm). I can see why the Murdoch press might want to have a go but can things really be as bad as everyone is saying ?

Its to do with poor management. There has been many changes within the organization and the management hasn't been very good towards the employees.Motivation and job satisfaction is the reason behind its down fall.
Sorry I dont work for "Qantas" I got the info from my Uncle who has been a cabin crew for the last 15 yrs.

Firstly I am from London. Second my qustion was genuine. There is clearly no need to stir up more trouble - there is enough anti-Qantas stuff here to last a lifetime. I was actually hoping someone from Qantas would say it's actually a good company and I shouldn't believe all the stuff I've read about them. Since no one has responded seems they must be in as big a mess as everyone says.
Surely someone has a good word for them ?!

It's a great company.
I love it and I love working for it.
The people are fantastic.
The pilots are excellent.
The other staff are excellent too.
The management are...management
I feel safe when I fly on Qantas.
Whenever I see a Qantas aircraft at a gate when I am overseas, it makes me feel like I am coming home.
is this what you wanted to know Pete?

Tarantella,
I know where you come from, I was there myself in Engineering & Maintenance for 9 years and I did enjoy working there. There are a lot of great people in the airline who give 150% everyday.
Yes, there are a few problms, but something you can expect when an airline doubles it's size in a few years, merges 2 disparate cultures etc. But you must look at the big picture, the airline is still incredibly safe, quite efficient and making excellent profits.

Nothing is wrong with QF. I think they're absolutely fantastic - always have done. Know a lot of QF FA's (also people in recruitment now). I think they have excellent cabin crew and staff. They pay well and it's a great job which is precisely why so many people want to join them.
