Time to become a number 1

Hello all

Am curious to know your opinion on the average amount of time, or minimum it takes for someone to become a number 1. UK based and flying low cost short haul sectors.

Any rough ideas appreciated.

Regards Tonker

Post

took me 12 months
for those first 12 months i was never late, always enthusiastic, never sick and worked my ass off!
however, its also depends on the airline you are working for's needs.
again its down to being in the right place right time.

best of luck and kep working hard, you'll get there.

Obviously it depends on the airline and their requirements.

My airline requires you to have one years flying experience (not necessarily with them but within the last two years), and I personally believe that should be the minimum of time as it takes most people about six months just to get used to the whole flying-job.

I felt ready to hand my application in straight after the year, but unfortunately I witness many people who just apply because they can, purely for the money, or because they feel it is expected of them.

I urge anybody who considers going for 'Number 1' taking some time to question their own motivation for applying, and to make sure they really know what is going to be expected of them. If they then feel ready, that's the time to apply, no matter how many years it takes.

So I reckon besides the company requirements it depends on your personality and maybe your experiences in general. Just don't let anybody else make the decision for you. When you are ready, you'll know :-)

tonker,

If this is your first flying job, then you can't legally be a Number 1 until after 12 months of flying...that is a CAA regulation. However, i may be completely wrong and just dreamt that up!!

You will know when you feel ready to go for it, everyone is different and some crew never want to go for it....However before you do apply, just ask yourself if you could confidently deal with an emergency on board? Being a no1, the crew will have all eyes on you to wave that magic wand

No, you're right Pandora, it IS a CAA requirement to have served 12 months.

Tonker, ACTUAL promotion time will depend on the airline in question. I got a direct entry Purser position with a contract airline after doing 2 years on charter.

So many factors come into it and they all depend on the type of airline, your performance and your aptitude. Good luck.

Thank you

I should have said at the start i'm Flight crew but was just interested in how people view this senior appointment. Some view it as something that only comes with 10 years experience etc.

Was just wandering thank you all.
