Cabin Crew? What are you worth?

Hi. I realise that a frequent questions from people like me concern pay and other benefits from various airlines. The question appears on most airline-specific threads, and on them are answers providing some quite good info. On airline’s own websites there is usually very little info – the reason why I and other hopefuls bother you with these questions.

The trouble is that for an outsider such as me it is really difficult to compare employers. This one pays commission on in-flight sales, that one has flight pay for flights only, the other one pays flight pay from clock on at work on day one right through to the end of a trip; it’s baffling! Even after countless hours on PPRuNe and cabincrew.com and other chatrooms, I’m still not confident I understand.

So here are my questions; I’d be really really grateful if you’d spend just a couple of minutes to answer, and I’m sure that there are loads of other wannabes that would value your contribution as well:
  • Which airline do you work for?
  • What job are you in (e.g. long-haul/short-haul, junior cabin crew or supervisor)?
  • What’s your average net/take home income?
  • How is it made up? e.g. £x basic pay, £x flight pay, £x sales commissions and £x unspent allowances.
Thanks soooo much for taking the trouble to answer.

Hello cchopeful.

I work for British Airways, and fly out of Gatwick. I am main crew at the moment as I have only been there just less than a year but hope to become a purser one day! Take home pay each month is about £1200 for me, sometimes a little bit less. Made up of around £800 basic pay and the rest allowances/hourly rate.
Hope that helps! x

Oh and by the way we are a single fleet at Gatwick so do mixture of short and long haul. I usually get around 3 or 4 long hauls a month and the rest short haul between days off.x

I work for the same company same base LGW

My net take home per month (if I exclude any crew card advances (a way we can access allowances downroute)) I probably get £1500 a month but I have gone up a payscale now. Basic 10186 my allowances are around £800 a month but then I bid for the money makers not the fun routes. Also last month £75 of that was IFR commision.

We are also about to recieve a 4.6% uprise on our basic (woohoo)

As a Junior at LHR when I was there for BA on worldwide basic year salary starts at 10499 and allwances are about £1200 a month at least.

It's a more complicated system but I used to get (net) around £1800 to take home. THat's not doign money making flights as I was too junior to bid for them.

I usually self fund nowadays so all my allowances go in to pay.

At gatwick I'm a grade 1 but to be honest I think we nearly all are and it makes no difference to your pay anyway.

Thanks Guys, that's really helpful.

Anyone from other airlines please? It will only take you a moment, and I'm sure will help lots of wannabes like me; you were here once yourself, strggling to understand the industry, so I know you are sympathetic.

I am Junior Crew for Virgin Atlantic. Virgin only flies to Long Haul Destinations. Trips last from 2 days up to 9 days. Basic pay is about £10,000. In addition to this we receive £18 per sector, operating around 8 - 12 flights per month. This means 4 - 6 trips per month. In my bank I receive approximately £900 per month. In addition to this, we receive allowances down route. These equal approximately £500 per month, but can reach as high as £900 depending on the kind of trips you do. Without too much effort, you should be able to save about half of your allowances, giving you a much needed boost to your salary. I use my bank account to pay my rent and bills, leaving my left over allowances to live on - food, entertainment etc. Full Industry Travel benefits are provided, plus 7 free flights anywhere on the Virgin network. You are based at LHR, but operate alot of flights from LGW. I live near LGW, so swap most of my flights to LGW.

Easyjet Rocks

Seriously Im not just saying so because I work for them at the moment but really Easyjet pay very well, they really look after their employees and best bit is its loads of fun!! Im always having a great laugh onboard with both pax and crew because we are an informal airline we can really let our personalities out and enjoy the job while doing it right at the same time. Im currently dual rated and am being sent out of base to cover crew shortages for a few days at a time so its great that i get to see some other places and get paid extra in night stop allowance for it. heehee Im only a junior and this month i expect to earn about 2000 net pay which isnt too bad at all is it? Especially when ya consider the low hours involved, the luxury accomodation and the great craic. hahaha Oh and theres a lovely new uniform on the way too
HOWEVER as Im irish and wana go home I´m thinkn of leaving for aerarann purely so that I can be with my family. Does anyone ere have any idea what the CCM and SCCM salaries are like with Aerarann?

Lightbulb easy pay

Hi airbourneadam,

a friend of mine got contract with ezy recently and the basic salary is as follows:

Prob cabin crew: 8,780
cabin crew: 10,184
Prob. senior cab. crew: 11,471
Senior cabin crew: 12,477

This compared to your figures looks like a pay cut...how come?..

Kikko,

I think your friend got old figures by mistake. Or is he maybe based in a non UK base?

I agree with Adam on the numbers although they only apply from October 2007 and will be slightly different because the last pay increase went with RPI and not 3.25%.

The Oct 2006 onwards figures were supposed to be:

CC Pro: £9,365
CC: £10,860
SCCM Pro: £12,235
SCCM: £13,310

The actual Oct 2006 onwards figures for
SCCM Pro has come to £12,277
SCCM: £13,354

Can't tell you CC Pro and CC I'm afraid but it will be slightly more than the supposed figures.
However, in Oct 2007 the basic salary will increase again by either 3% or RPI (whichever is higher). If it's 3% it'll be the figures Adam stated plus a bit extra because of the actual figures from the 2006 increase. If the RPI is higher than 3% it'll be even more.

Hope this cleared things up a bit and didn't actually confused you more.

Thanks Dolley,

yes the figures she has been given are for the Italian MPX base and apply to oct 2006/sept2007.
I did not realize that the pay might be different for secondment bases.

Currently at BA LHR longhaul, after 3 years service my salary is £11,983. Allowances go up and down depending on where you fly. Recently my lowest net take home was £1215 the highest £2667 a month. If you get australia trips then the latter is more common.

I fly with British Airways, World wide fleet. On average you'd take home about £2000 per month, but for me it can vary from 1400-2300 or there abouts.

If it's money you're most interested in then I think your best bet would be to apply for British Airways LHR short haul. When I was on short haul I'd usually take home around 1500-1800 per month.

Thumbs down

Without too much effort, you should be able to save about half of your allowances, giving you a much needed boost to your salary.
And they say the pilots are tight-arses... the allowances are there to be eaten and drunk up the wall of the local pub. If you're saving it they're giving you too much.

I am working for Aer Arann the last 2 years and its all good.

anyway money wise your lookin roughly at between 2000 and 2500 a month.Takes a lot of sectors to get to the 2500 mark but normally i come out with about 2200 which is really good for aer arann cos there is very little workload involved!

anyway if you need more info please reply and ill get back to you as soon as I can

Take care
