If you're after reasonably-priced, with good transport links, try the following:

Hounslow East/Central...West, if you must...
Bedfont
Hayes
Hanworth
Feltham, if you like to live on the edge...!
Harmondsworth

For transport, I chose Hounslow East - the bus station is literally around the corner, as is the tube, British Rail in Isleworth is just up the road, and it's a 10 minute drive to Terminal 4, 15 minutes to Central area, 18 minutes to Waterside, 20 minutes to Terminal 5.

I also have the High St for shopping, and the new ASDA just a short walk/drive away too. Okay, the local populace aren't necessarily the greatest, but I'm not a snob and it has it's own 'charm'. Though you'll hear plenty of people slate the area too. Normally people that either A/Have never lived here or B/Have never been here!

Post LHR accom...

Stillwaiting,

There are a few places round LHR that you could consider.

If you don't drive & want to be closer to London you could consider places such as Hounslow,Boston Manor,Northfields,Acton,Ealing which are all on the District line to LHR & are popular with crew/airport staff because of that.

It's worth keeping in mind though that the underground does'nt run 24hrs so if you're going to be on BA Shorthaul you'll need to keep that in mind as there will be some early starts & late finishes.

If you operate a flight back into T4 you may end up having to go back to the Compass Centre, then make your own way back to T1 to catch the tube home,as the crew bus won't drop you at T4.
Flight into T1 are'nt a problem as the crew bus will drop you off by crew customs or at the security control post outside the terminal.
Also you'll have to get to the Compass Centre from the LHR Central area prior to your report & this can also take a bit of time.

These things will only really affect you if you're going to be flying shorthaul but,I guess if you're going to be flying longhaul for an airline from LHR these factors won't really be an issue.
But there are plenty of crew who do this so it's definately not out of the realms of reality!

Going west from LHR you could consider places such as Langley,Slough,Windsor & Maidenhead as they're very well situated for LHR & have very good bus links which run from about 04.30 to 23.00 which terminate at LHR & stop only a stones throw from the Compass Center on the way too.

I think that the BAA do a special monthly bus travel card specifically aimed at airport employees which you can use on this bus service & others in the area.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm looking into them now.
I see from the local maps that West Drayton is also very close, yet not mentioned, is this area to be avoided?
