NJS staff travel

I recently had an interview with NJS. I was unsuccessful but one of the interviewers mentioned after the interview that they get NO staff travel. Perhaps what went through my mind at this point came accross on my face. Perhaps this may have contributed to my non-suitability for the job .

Anyway I'm over it now and will use my 10 year track record of excellent customer service and 4 years of flying experience for the benefit of my current airline. They do seem like a really neat company to work for tho, and I will re-apply in 12 months. Staff travel is a very small part of why I fly and would be happy to sacrifice this to work for a great company.

That's no good funbus, you sound extremely skilled for the job I agree that staff travel is really a small part and I hate flying standby. Lately I have been finding confirmed fares at excellent prices through trowling the web and of course we get interline as airlines employees still.

Has anyone got any news on the November ground school? Anyone going or heard anything?

Welcome Aboard, sorry I wasn't making much sense there...

I'm a little fuzzy on the details but if I remember rightly NJS and JQ were competing for the contract to fly and maintain the 717s for QantasLink. As you say, NJS won it... which means JQ would be later into Perth than first thought. However I think JQ would likely still have plans for routes between Perth and interstate. (at SOME stage... proabbly when I'm 50!! )

Which ones I'm not sure. Given they're a 'leisure' airline I'm thinking maybe Gold Coast and so on with the 320's at a later stage. Who knows, maybe the 'mother ship' will decide to leave the places like Broome to JQ.... then again, maybe not.... You just never know what is going to happen next!!

EKCREW, have you hear anything else???

That's right. We get no staff travel.
As for the Nov g/s there are going to be 20 in it and they're direct entry into QFlink, which is causing some unrest with those who are currently in charter with their name on the transfer list. Be prepared for some negativity from existing crew about that one. Harsh but it's reality.
In anycase I'm looking forward to fresh new blood!!

SkySista -

I received an email from Adele about a week ago....asking me to contact her because she had a start date for my GS. She had sent the email about a week before I actually read it....as I had been away on a trip....so by the time I phoned her this morning, it was too late and the GS was full.

Never mind though, it actually works out better for me anyway as the next one is not until February sometime...so plenty of time to get organised.

I can't wait.....I had such a great chat with Adele.....she is so lovely, I am so excited to be working with this fantastic company. All along they have been so professional and very easy going with everything.....very understanding and I can't wait to work with them.

Hope everyone is well

CNS & DRW will both be 717 ports eventually.I am curious with info on this thread regarding the earnings of CNS & DRW crews up around $4000 to $4500 per month due to overnights. How many trips are you doing and do you get much call out on RDO'S for overtime. Seems like GOOD PAY considering the salary is moderate!! My question is this how long have the trips been so regular and could it change in the near future??

Hi everyone just curious if CNS crew are still doing only 3 day trips and where do they stay in Perth. Also saw that QLink coming to Adelaide to do PtLincoln & K.I. Is this NJS contract or actual QLink.

WINE O BABE: No CNS is only doing 2 day trips until the end of this month until the 717 is rolled out, then its back to 3 day trips to PER for them a FO told me the other night, so they only see ASP for an overnight. In PER I am pretty sure they stay at Pacific Intl on Murray St. Why did you want to know, gonna come to Nat Jet? Or stalk the crew in PER? *jokes* With regards to the Port Lincoln flights etc. I strongly doubt National Jet will be involved, don't think they would need a 146/717 to those places, I assume its Eastern on the Dash8. Though it would make sense for National Jet to do it, and we do have a spare Dash8 lying around these days (though in National Jet colours. Yet we have had Dash8's in QLink colours in the past when we did DRW-DIL/ASP-AYQ etc). Huh... who knows?

Talking Anything about National Jet (NJS)

Hi all, I am interested in getting some up-to-date info on NJS.

(Mods, I did a search but nothing of the prior NJS threads seems to be here... apologies if I'm not searching properly...)

I am renewing my application info and I'm interested to know how things are now at NJS.

Specifically, I know most new-hires are full-time. However I have heard from a few that it's not quite as full-on as I had been led to believe. So, here's a few points I'd be grateful to get some info/advice on:

*Training - where, how long for, do you pay anything upfront, accommodation/flights if not in WA (I'm applying for Perth base), are you paid during training or is there an allowance given for meals etc during training away from home?

* Rosters/Hours: On average, how many hours would you do in a week/fortnight/month?? Average flight/duty times, do you do back-to-back shifts, overnights? (where are they?) any bidding system, time off etc... any such thing as Part-Time? Do you have guaranteed minimum hours??

* Lifestyle - how is it to fit your life around flying? e.g studying, family etc? Weekends? Do the same people always work weekends/holidays or is it pretty fair?

* Aircraft/Fleets - do all newhires for charter start on the Dash? Or both Dash and 146 together? If going in to QLink, is it 146 first, then 717? hich do you prefer to work on?

* Progression/Terms - are all successive schools starting on charter, or possibly more going direct to QantasLink? Are you on a fixed term contract, or employed on an ongoing basis?? What are the allowances like? Anyone got a ballpark average yearly wage/salary (base) plus a guesstimate of total allowances? I know there's pretty much no Staff Travel, but that's cool, I'm not used to it, anyway!!!

* Socially - what are the crew like? Does anyone mix when not at work? Events/social clubs etc?? (Just like to know coz my current employer has a pretty good social club)

Sorry for asking so many questions, but I really want to make an informed decision whether this is right for me. I don't want to waste anyone's time.

Also, if there is anyone out there who works/has worked for both NJS and Skywest, I'd love to hear from you!!!

Thanks so much!!!

Sky

It's ok, SkySista, this can be the official NJS thread
If it works we might add it to the FAQ links.

Thanks, Flyblue!!

I know for a fact there was other NJS stuff... coz i started that one too... but I guess it all got lost in 'the move'.... Pity I forgot to save/print it all.....

And yes, if anyone else has any questions/comments, PLEASE feel free to chip in, as there's likely something I've forgotten there!!!

Hey Sky,

I'll try and answer as much as possible as I was in your shoes not too long ago....

*Training - where, how long for, do you pay anything upfront, accommodation/flights if not in WA (I'm applying for Perth base), are you paid during training or is there an allowance given for meals etc during training away from home?

Training is done in Adelaide, you don't pay anything upfront though there are rumours that this will be introduced owing to the cost of training each flightie and then some leave very early on. Accommodation is paid for, two of you share a room at a lovely hotel. You are paid your training wage during training which is $22000 pa. There are no allowances for meals during training.

Rosters vary greatly. A lot of days are just 2 sector days, sometimes only a 4 hour duty but then you can have a massive day with 10+ hours. Like other carriers you have 10 days off a month (though can be drafted to work on 2 of these which can be a bit tricky planning important events. Can work up to 6 days straight but then usually have about 3 days off. I'm finding I have quite a bit of spare time on my hands at the moment but then it can be the other extreme the next month. There are few overnights predominantly Broome, though Alice, Darwin and Cairns can feature depending on roster requirements. There is no bidding system though you can lodge the good old manual request for preferred flying. You can nominate 3 'gold days' a year which are definite days off (if you are successfull in acquiring these gold days. There is Part time but you can only put your name on the list after 4 years service and the list is loooooong. Not sure if there are minimum hours but lately the groups have been full time employees. It is possible to go casual with consultation with management.

* Lifestyle - how is it to fit your life around flying? e.g studying, family etc? Weekends? Do the same people always work weekends/holidays or is it pretty fair?

I find my roster pretty spread out, have been getting quite a lot of weekends off or at least one day of the weekend. As you are home each night it is quite family friendly. The Qantaslink division work weekends, charter do not work as many weekends. Quite a few girls study or even have second jobs.

* Aircraft/Fleets - do all newhires for charter start on the Dash? Or both Dash and 146 together? If going in to QLink, is it 146 first, then 717? hich do you prefer to work on?

New recruits to charter start on the 146 and then have their conversion on the Dash 8. If your training group goes straight into the link, then trained on the 146 then converted to the 717. Crew tend to prefer the 717 as newer aircraft, more room etc.

Totally depends... Generally new training groups start in charter and then you progress to the link in 1-2 years. I believe they used to offer a fair bit of fixed term contracts but recently new recruits are full time. Starting salary is $22000 pa plus allowances and you're stuck on that for a whole year. Then it goes up about 7k for year 2. I think it's about an 8 year pay scale. Crew that have been working for a few years can earn in excess of $1000 a week clear. You get paid you're base salary mid month and then base salary and allowances at the end of the month, so mid month pay is pretty low. For first year you're mid month pay is around $900. DTA is $4/hr, plenty of other allowances but I am still finding pay quite low. About $1200 roughly for end of month pay. After 1 year of employment you are entitled to staff travel on the qantaslink routes that are operated by NJS at a reduced rate.

* Socially - what are the crew like? Does anyone mix when not at work? Events/social clubs etc?? (Just like to know coz my current employer has a pretty good social club)

I am unaware of any social club but crew do mix outside work and quite a few live together. Maybe you could set up a social group Sky?? It's still a small base so everyone knows everyone.

Hope this helps yourself and others.

If I can help anymore just PM

WA xo

Thank you SOOOOOOO much for all your fab info, Welcome Aboard!! it is just what I need!!!

Huhm $22k/yr sounds ok to me!! (As someone who has only ever worked casually/parttime... hehe... poor student syndrome....)

The bit about study is encouraging... at the moment I am finishing up a Diploma... I have three days per week in class (not full days though) so would pretty much be avail. for any other time (yes I'm a sad with no commitments... hehehe j/k) Though they say starting May so by then would only have 4 weeks to go of class really...

Anyway I'll keep my fingers x'ed... updated my app last night so hopefully I'll get a call soon... (I'm STILL kicking myself for declining in August when they called! D'oh!!)

Thanks again, if there's anything else I'll PM... then if it's something which is ok for public view perhaps you/I could post it to help other NJS 'wannabes'

Have a fab night!!

Skysista,
here is the thread
The search engine has changed a little, so you need to be extra careful about all the serch options: if you don't check it, the risk is to have the search done only in the last month's posts.

Oops....!

Sorry Flyblue!!! Thanks for fixing my boo-boo ... I got the feeling ididn't quite know how to drive that search thingie.... though I did try 'National Jet', 'NJS' and 'National Jet Systems' in CC forum....? Weird....

Also for anyone here...

NJS wanted me to do a final interview, i applied about a year ago and i think they called me in Sept... I had to decline... have been kicking myself ever since. The lady on the phone was very nice, I explained due to my commitments I wasn't in a position to work with them at that time and i didn't want to take up their time at interview if I probably wouldn't be able to start right away... she told me to re-apply when I got a chance... so... I reapplied online (my old app was in the mail, none of this 'Profiler' stuff!!)

I am wondering how much of a bearing that profiler thingie has on your chances... I'm scared somehow i meet all the critera but blow it on the profiler... are you able to not do it...? Then though the green thingies on the application page will not be complete so they may not even look at it at all then...! So... do you think i should call and explain they told me to reapply, and see if perhaps they will review my application for another interview???

Help I'm really worried now, I don't want to miss out again!!!

I think they'd be totally intrigued of your occupation and put you straight to interview. The interview would probably be them questioning you more on all your stories than anything else
