Ansett Anniversary

To all the former Ansett employees out there, I am thinking of you all 4 years on from the collapse of one of the Worlds Great Airlines.

Hoping that you are all safe, well and happy.

May the memories never fade and friendships remain strong.

In the early hours of this morning, was the 4 year anniversary of the demise of one of the best airlines ever. Really not sure I've gotten over it- pretty much like a death in the family really! To everyone out there I sincerely hope life has picked up for you and been able to move on. For those still struggling keep your chin up and don't give in!!! Ansett gave me not just a job but a life experience, & regardless of those who will no doubt negatively reply to this thread, just think of the thousands who lost not only a job but being part of a "family".

all teary about Ansett

I can completely understand how you ex AN's must feel.
I myself never worked for AN, but I had many friends that did, I have never known a company that would make there staff feel so important, I remember the comaderie of the employees and management, and the obvious pride that was shown working for said company. Such a shame we'll never see the likes of that again! Oh how I yearn for the G.O.D's

I will pass on your good thoughts to my daughter-in-law who I am still sure misses it. However, my son likes having her home more often for the kids

Nothing more to add to what has been said already except I will never forget all the fab crew I had the chance of flying with, you guys and girls were all very special and made my trips to remember for a lifetime!!

(Especially pigging out on Tim Tams at 3am in the jumpseat - what more could I ask for?? )

Wish all of you well in your current and future lives and careers, wherever you are!

Four years and I don't know how many hundreds of thousands of miles I've flown but it's kept my cards gold, AN were still the best in the business and I still miss all you special people so much on every trip down under - good luck whatever you are doing now.

Hi everyone,
Good to see this anniversary didn't go unnoticed in this forum
So just what are all the ex Ansett crew doing at the moment ?

It would be interesting to know how many people made it into full time positions within the industry .

As for myself , although the collapse was gut wreching , with 4 years of hindsight it probably will turn out to be the best thing that has happened to me. I had no desire to work for any other airline but , after a while managed to get into the Ambulance service as a Paramedic. I have studied very hard at uni and have just completed my final written theory exams and medical panel- an oral examination involving advanced life support in life threatening emergencies.

Just another 12 months on the road and I will be fully qualified and can settle into a great career . I can recommend it to anyone (though not the squeamish!)

It was great to see some of my other colleagues who are going through the same process at the moment . 4 all told. I know of quite a few other Ansett cabin crew out there who have been accepted into other emergency service careers.

I guess life is about realising your potential, and the people I worked with at Ansett had so much of it . I know a few have had a go at starting thier own businesses . I'd love to hear how they are all going.

I got together with a couple of ex colleagues a little while ago . One thing we all agreed on was that we loved our time with Ansett and it was a generally easy way to make a very good living. We also were amazed that the people who miss Ansett the most are the ones that never stopped whinging about anything and everything about the place. With the wonderful benefit of hindsight , all those whinges seem so petty now , and I wet my pants laughing at some of the rants from cabin crew in these forums.

I just wish that they could realise that , although it has it's moments ,being a flight attendant is one of the easiest ways to make a decent living ever!

Cheers and good luck to you all .

couldn't agree more about whingers. A lot of people in this job need to stop and have a think about how many people would cut their throat to get in! Flight Attendants generally have it so good, yet they seem to take it all for granted! Go and do 8-12 hours in a factory or go and work at Coles for a week and see how good our job is! Yes, i don't agree with some things that happen, but that's life and you just have to deal with it the best that you can.

I work with a lot of ex-Ansett people who are now with QF and they are some of the best and passionate F/A's in the job.

Good luck to all!

Even though I 'resigned' from AN in 1989 after 20 years of service and have worked for a number of airlines since then I still miss the AN life and the AN people regardless of what department they were in but especially the cabin crew.

We did not know what we had until we 'lost it'. I did not realise at the time we were a joke outside Australia with industrial disputes especially pilots/refuellers/TWU ground staff at key times.

Just today I read Northwest are going to outsource up to 57.5% of their cabin crew needs (5,600 positions) due to the impact of low cost carriers in their markets. Northwest are unable to raise fares to compete so they slowly bleed to death.

Sir Peter Abeles was concerned about the impact of deregulation in Australia but no one took him seriously. I was told at the time he wanted to send some executives overseas to learn first hand but there was lots of resistance from them.

I think Ted Forrester or Graeme McMahon may have gone for a brief look but there was no feedback. The AFAP reaction was an ambit claim for a 29.42% pay increase in case of any new start ups. e.g Impulse

Good Strong Bond

I hadn't realised the date myself but as I think of it, it is great to see the ex Ansett people bonding together. Time will be a good healer of your loss; look to the future and build new friendships and move forward.

I was travelling in a taxi past another airport going into Melbourne and it looked like there was a Ansett aircraft taking passengers at the terminal. The striking colour scheme on the tail caught my attention. It's quite hard to believe that the Australian Government didn't take Air New Zealand's offer to restructure the airline to a low cost carrier. It would have been the right decision.

Yes, regard and best wishes to all old AN staff.
I now get to travel the QF network and I am always running into an ex-AN staff member, in the air, at check-in etc. I only hope that maurice and QF will 'see the light' and give F/T jobs to the ex-AN crew.

Legal_Counsel are you on crack?

While I like the tone of you positive post encouraging us to move forward and how you can not believe the Government did not help, what happened to the anti Ansett stance you were taking in the D&G forum, and I quote:

“No oner really gives a stuff what happened to Ansett. I am glad they are gone. You only need to read the threads on pprune to see what a bunch of pathetic staff they were. And now they claim some sort of title to some poor bastard's attempt to get recognition by using the Ansett name. How pathetic. ”

“What sucks is these people all want us to fell sorry for them when they got good return for their year on demands for high wages and conditions which kept air fares at an all time high. The staff are to blame for Ansett's failures.”

“Not sure what this guy is doing but I am getting tired of hearing about people "restarting Ansett". The brand has no value from a marketing perspective and this mob are not doing anyone a favour flying it. Time to bury it I think. If I were Mr B' I would put his name on the planes because that has far more meaning in aviation history. ”

“Well maybe that's just it, you loved working for Ansett but what part was that? The billboard or the airline? ”

Airline of the Year award 2 years in a row, best International airline as seen by Mr.Branson, official Olympic carrier, totally dead 12 months later.

13th Sep 2001 Ansett was carrying around 35,000 plus customers a day, make no mistake about this, Ansett was murdered by Anderson and Dixon, due to absolute gross and obscene incompetence by Air New Zealand and the final act by Clarke.

Dixon had the Australian Govt. in his pocket, to make sure that SIA did not get Ansett in their hands under any circumstances, Qantas was totally scared, they could not match the standard and service of Ansett the airline or its staff.

LeftRightOut, you are correct, Ansett was one of the worlds great airlines if not the best, and the staff were second to none.
