Clothes & Makeup for Interviews
Hi all,
I know that at least some of this has been covered in the "Interview" type threads.... but I wanted to know a little bit about how the different airlines like you to "look" during interviews/assessments, etc.
I have been following the Emirates thread, and can't seem to find anything mentioned about makeup (maybe I missed it.)
From looking at all their publicity shots, most of the models are wearing red lipstick and quite a lot of nicely done makeup. Knowing that they are quite conservative when it comes to appearance, how would you suggest one go about makeup etc for interview with them?
I myself don't really suit very red lipstick (more red/brown, which I am happy with.) My sister says just to go with gloss but I feel that will be a little too "casual" for them. I'm wearing either black or beige suit and was going to go for brown-toned eye makeup. Also wondering about false lashes, whether they would look trashy or not, as in my opinion mine aren't very noticeable or long. I have heard lots of girls say it makes them look a million bucks.
Also anyone else who has been to DJ or JQ interviews - is a more casual look okay for them, or should you still go "all out"?
Anyone else that has any questions I haven't covered, go right ahead!!! I haven't the least idea about this kind of thing!!!

can I just suggest.. if you're going to go for a 'new look' with the whole false eye lash thing - try it out before hand!
I just wore a black suit (skirt and jacket) sexy pair of heels, white shirt, and a neck scarf - with my hair tied up
I cannot for the life of me get away with lipstick - especially red lipstick, so I opted for coloured lip gloss

Lol, yes, I am planning to do a "test run" of everything before the day! Ha! I can just see myself trying to do eyelashes on the morning of an interview.... not!! If the whole thing looks too OTT, I'll try a few at the ends of my eyes instead of along the whole lash line... anyway, will see what works.
Managed to find a nice red gloss which looks okay, much better than a lipstick as it's lighter....
Now on the hunt for a good suit! (Had the shoes ages ago

i know that the airline i work for a have a minimum make-up requirment-mascara,blusher and lippy...anything else is up to u. i unfortunatley am as pale as milk so have to wear a lot more, but some gorgeous girls at thomas cook look great wearing the minimum. whatever u wear, u will look FAB...

it's one of those unfortunate facts of life that some girls need wear only the minimum of makeup.

I have always wondered for those of you who work in hot conditions (e.g. QF Link in FNQ & XR girls at Broome/Kununnurra etc etc how do you stop your makeup sliding off/melting. I mean all well and good if they want you to look good in theory, but out there I'm sure it can't be easy!!!
Something I thought of today - do any crew get memo'd if they get sunburned on a stopover? Is there a "no lobsters here" policy? or are you just told to cover cover cover?

i do cheat.. i go for selftanning cream. U gotta be careful and get a natural lookin one.. ONce i ended up lookin like I jst went off a carrot diet. Gosh!
Havin some nice tan helps.. no need of too much make up but if u have spots or difficult skin make sure u cover it right up. They don like not clean, unhealthy lookin skin. Mascara - definitelly and if u cant be bothered with eyeshadows use at least a cream or white coloured one under ur eyebrows to hightlight ur eyes. As for lipstick.. colour doesn actually matter.. as long as it looks neat.
Make sure you smell nice. NO too much jewellery but earings at least. And perfect nails. At least transparent nailpolish.
Definitely skirt suit. Mango had some nice ones last time i went shopping for suit. GO for something that has got that general =flight attendant/military uniform= look. Colour don really matter. In fact i went for nice brown one with cream shirt underneath. Make sure ur shoes are not open. simple will do. Hair tied up and make sure u don wear any crazy wett look funky hair styles.

oh and one more thing.. if u going for emirates forget all that look issue. In front of my eyes i\'ve seen girl gettin to final interview with me lookin like they jst ran in from field..
U jst make sure u fit into a role of a team player.. always address other candidates with their names and don be too dominative but still manage to express urself. Mingle well with other even during breaks and when they ask you whats ur happiest moment in ur life. Don mention whatever degrees u achieved but jst make up some stories about u becomin an auntie or gettin a puppy for ur b\'day, Trust me that will work

Sunburn? If I have 3 days off at home I have a sunbed on day one. That way i'm less likely to burn. Also I find that once abroad by the pool I do 30 mins on sunbed, followed by 30 mins in shaded swim up bar, then alternate, works!!
Emirates or any airline which advertises itself with attractive crew in perfect lipstick, they value their image..... I would suggest a light foundation, translucent powder, blusher, then a dusting of bronzer to blend it all. Neutral eyeshadow, mascara, minimal eyeliner if needed (no falsies, you'll be too concious of them). Lipstick, whatever shade you normally wear day to day, or a subtle gloss. Get your hair tied back, and straggly bits either pin or spray back.
Melting make up? Try a good salon and grab some testers for Guinot or Matis products. Both do oil control gel/ creams, etc.
Make sure your lunchtime ciabatta isnt stuch in your teeth too!!

Oh well as long as I pick something not too over the top, it should be okay. Guess that rules out the Valentino then Jewellery I was thinking the same thing, just plain & simple. I am definitely wearing a watch and some plain diamond stud earrings, but I wasn't sure if a ring would be too much... oh well. Play it safe I suppose.
Nails - so I guess the red nail polish is a no-no then?
Seems basic French polish is the way to go!I have no idea how we are expected to look good and not carry a ton of stuff with us! I mean really! A girl needs a handbag you know. I knew my obssession with travel-size cosmetics was going to come in handy one day.....

I personally know of 1 person who was reprimanded and told to take leave until his skin was at least pale orange.
Seems he'd taken the tanning thing a little too far and his Qantas (regional) boss wasn't impressed.
Either take it easy at the solarium or you could try a fantastic product by Model Co. which is a spray tan without the fuss and mess, with exceptional results. (great also for hiding suntan lines caused by straps etc)
As far as perfume goes, why not try a body spray such as 'Impulse'
You'll find it's less offensive and acts as a deodorant for the body. Only I don't recommend using it as deodorant on it's own.
Keep the jewels to a minimum; practical stud earings and a wedding band if applicable.
As far as make-up goes; less is more.
Realising the previous comments regarding the fortunes of those women who can get away with the bare minimum, I realise that the less is more concept can be lost on some.
It does not have to be.
Stick with your natural tones which compliment your complexion, and keep it simple.
Same rule applies to hair.
This way, you will feel comfortable within yourself.
As for attire; always present yourself in a professional manner.
Again, maintain personal comfort.
Shoes should be practical, but they are also probably the one item you can 'wow' with.
Invest in a really good, stunning pair of shoes....shoes say a lot about the person
(by stunning, I don't mean Hot pink with diamonte straps )
Apart from that, get a great nights sleep, have a healthy breakfast, get out there and - Kick Ass

Have heard the praises of Clarins BFB sung by many a flight attendant! Am planning to get some as soon as the appropriate funds happen (poor student syndrome right now! )
Going with what is comfortable sounds best. I have these awesome shoes with the nicest heels, but I'm not the most confident walker in them. So - it's the sensible-heeled but still posh-looking ones for me!!
Another annoying question - have heard a bit about these "face mist" sprays - what's the verdict? Some say don't go for aromatherapy ones, others say do.... have been thinking they'd be great for driving around in summer, as well as for flying!! Roasting at the traffic lights is SO unfun!

i dont think it really matters as long as u look urself and look well presented.... recruiters are normal people...i dont think they take note of the colour lipstic u wear..as long as u are well groomed and it suits u ....

I would tend to steer clear of the face mist sprays as despite what you might think, they can actually dry out your skin.
Stick to drinking plenty water and trust me, your skin will benefit from it (at least a glass every 20 mins or so when flying!!!)

Okay, quick warrie.........
Not ALL that long ago but still, back in the good old days, a certain Aussie airline had a gent in charge of hostie recruitment who got very involved in the process.
According to "the network", blondes were given preference. So quite a few blondes applied, were interviewed and hired only to later on, mysteriously metamorphasize into brunettes, redheads, whatever!!
Anyway the word on the street was that this guy was a big fan of a particular football club. So what does one aspirant do? Struts into the interview, blonde hair, high heels, short skirt and carrying a nice big cake iced with the team COLOURS!!!!!
I guess he figured the qualifications were all about the "same" so he looked for other qualities to pick them apart. IE Enterprise, improvisation, initiative, etc. Seemed to work well although some of the girls bitched and moaned about what they had to do even after they got the job.
