Who's in the lav?

Remember the "Stews in the loos" scandal a few months ago? Turns out other airlines also have trouble with crew in the toilet...
Picture the scene: on a flight within Europe, the Captain goes back to the lavatory for a much needed sanitary break.
On completing the task in hand (history doesn't record if he washed his hands, but let's assume he did
) he attempted to open the door and return to the flight deck. Much to his chagrin the door refused to open. Repeated attempts to coax it open also failed. After some time, his attempts to open it had escalated into attempts to kick it down. Unfortunately he had forgotten that the lavatory door on his aircraft opens inward.
By this time the entire cabin crew had gathered around the lavatory, and were trying to persuade the skipper to desist, to enable them to open the door from outside. However, his efforts were so strenuous that no cabin crew member felt able to access the hinge release mechanism. After some time he managed to break the door free of its track, and returned to the flight deck.
Overnight work by station engineering managed to repair the door sufficiently that passengers were again able to use the facilities.
Captain X runs the risk of being known as "the captain who locked himself in the loo" for the rest of his career.

If I am not mistaken, this is yet another 'airline myth' fable that has been doing the airline rounds for years! Stick any story that comes through the internet into snopes.com and you will find that they invariably come up phony. This 'locked in toilet fable' (always with the least popular crew members- for cabin crew read Flight Deck- for maximum impact) has been doing the rounds in my flying career since 1970. It is told around so often that people often actually believe they were there.

Quite simply lad.......you been had! Nice story. all that's missing is an element of truth! But you will come back and say whoever told you it was actually there! Yeah yeah

Exclamation

Notwithstanding notsosmartashethinksheis' doubts, this is not the urban myth... personally I have never heard an urban myth of a captain locking himself in the lavatory. I am familiar with the story of an entire crew locking themselves out of the flight deck.... this is not that story.
It is possible that I was told a tall tale- however, as (so far) I have heard the same story from
(1) The entire cabin crew (separately).
(2) The engineer who repaired the door.
(3) The base captain.
(4) The captain who was supposed to be taking the aircraft over at the next turnaround.
I could name the airline, the flight number and the captain, and specify the date- as I have no wish to embarrass those involved (except face to face), I will say only that this happened in the first week of November 2004.

Mile High's been on for the past few weeks on it's second series, saw it on Sun though and at the end it said it would be on again next year so we will need to wait and see. Fantastic program.. some things in it are so true but the others are a complete load of

Mile high is a really cool show, but there's a lot of air crew out there who think it's rubbish because it's not very life like. Unless I'm mistaken, it isn't meant to be entirely representitive of the real lifes of cabin crew and pilots. i.e. it's not just air crew that watch the program, it has to appeal to a wider audience!

Do people think Eastenders is rubbish because it's not entirely representitive of real life in the East end of London??!

If it were meant to be entirely representitive it would be called "Airline"!

Snoop

Sounds like a great urban legend! Never let the truth get in the way of a good story though I haven't come across lav's that open inwards... seen one that slides and kinks inwards? like a concertina?
Sinala- It'd be great to see such a fine program down-under again! the great part is it's so out-there, but every now and then you see a glimse of truth! usually concerning a crazier slip!

Captain Can't its kinda scary when you are watching them do something crazy (either on board, or on an overnight somewhere) and you are going "been there, done that"..... even scarier when it involves nudity and/or a room party!

*disclaimer* I am a responsible adult and never partake in any of the implied activities. I spend my overnights sitting in hotel rooms figuring out ways to end world hunger. I also like to spend said time on overnights contemplating my navel, or counting the number of fleas I can see jumping around on the carpet at any one time.

Yep - we've had the series here. Very similar to the UK version except the average pax size..

I had the opportunity to go on board the aeroplane involved this week- damage is still evident around the door if you look closely. At one point a crew member tried to use the facilities- the door came off in his hand!

All the way from SAPCO to Daventry
