Virgin Atlantic starts flying to Oz 12/04

Virgin Atlantic are flying to Sydney via HKK starting in December this year.

A couple of months ago I remember reading on pprune the rumours that Virgin Atlantic will open a base in Sydney.

Has anyone heard anything?

You're correct. Virgin are flying to Sydney Via Hong Kong on the 7th December. They will be using an A340-600 kitted out with the new Upper Class Suite. The flight number to Sydney will be the same to Hong Kong VS200 and VS201 for the return.

According to their site, they're only recruiting customer service agents for Sydney, not cabin crew, at this stage.

I have also read several rumours about the same subject else where.

Virgin had also reportedly submitted an application to the IASC for the rights, and slots to fly between the eastern coast of Australia and the US (LAX and SFO from memory).

It would be a full service operation with the group looking at acquiring up to Six B744's for the job.

I think in light of this information, whether it be true or not, VS would have to open crew base in SYD. Unless of course, the flights are operated with DJ staff?

i think Virgin Atlantic would have a fight on their hands with Qantas too, especially with flight going to happen to the US from Brisbane and already out of Sydney etc, but they do say competition is healthy

Angel

Quote from another site..................

Hey some news about SYD route ! Good news is were going there bad news for those of us based in London we aint getting to go there ! Virgins going to make us operate just the LHR-HKG-LHR sectors of the service that is if your cabin crew or senior ! Those lucky enough to be IFBT or CSS or FSM will get the joy of actually operating the full trip down to SYD ! The rest of the crew will be those who they are recruiting now !!!! If your looking for a job with Virgin based in SYD and are Australian Nationals or are a resident apply now !!!! But you will only operate SYD-HKG-SYD ! See you at the hotel in HKG as of December the 8th !

Checked out thier Ozzie web site and it doesn't look like they have vancancies for crew. Flight deck or cabin crew.

Only seems to lists other positions e.g reservations. marketing ect.

Maybe they will advertise when they get up and running and all the other postions filled first.

Good luck to all who apply.

Ground Staff positions

Did anyone see the SMH on the weekend?

Apparantly they advertised for ground staff in SYD. Interviews 16th Aug, with a start date in September.

Do you think its likely they will advertise for Cabin Crew, or will they obtain staff from their brothers and sisters at Blue....??

The rumour is once they have the ground and management positions sorted they will be recruiting for cabin crew. Virgin Atlantic have a Sydney office why not call or e-mail they may have more information.

I was just looking at the VS site. There are loads of jobs they are advertising for in Australia. But nothing for Cabin Crew!

I guess we have to keep our eyes peeled!

Goodluck to anyone going for the other positions.

There are lots of rumours about who will crew these flights but nothing has been confirmed yet.

The latest Galley FM suggests:-

5 UK Based Crew
5 HKG Based Crew
5 SYD Based Crew

We'll just have to wait and see although if a SYD base is proposed perhaps we should contact the union to keep UK jobs in the UK (oops sorry I've been brainwashed by reading the thread about the Qantas LHR base!!)

Only 5 crew at each base? I thought that taking into account annual leave, sick days, days off etc that you needed at least 80 crew to cover a 747.

I wonder if Virgin Blue staff would get first priority to transfer across?

Sorry! What I was trying to say was of the 15 crew on the A340-600 there could be a split of 5 UK, 5 HKG and 5 SYD crew.

I'm sure Virgin Blue crew will be given the opportunity to apply. Especially those who are currently working for Virgin Atlantic on the exchange programme.
