Lightbulb Gcse Maths question/Mytravel

Most of the airlines state that you have to have a GCSE in maths. I have a D and an E in Gcse maths, (intially got an E and I retook the exam and got a D).

I just tried to fill in the MyTravel application form online and it has stopped me continuing with the form because on the 'do you have a grade c or above in gcse maths and english' i couldnt click yes, despite having 2 A*'s in English, because of the result in Maths!!

My question anyway since I am rambling a bit! Is, are the Airlines absolutely strict on this? I mean I have quite a lot of experience workwise related to maths/dealing with money and payments etc, and I also thought most of the airlines give you a mathematics test anyway? Or do I need to go to night school and make sure I get a C before I can continue with my quest?

Any advice will be very much appreciated!

Hi AHW.
My advice to you is to give MyTravel a call and explain to them the problem ur having with the online form..in MY experience when i applied to a UK charter airline I didnt have all of the GCSE requirements but they overlooked that and i got the job and worked for them for 3 years..so theres no harm in trying..I think if you are what they are looking for and right for the job they are not too strict with the qualification thing..I have gotten into 2 airlines with out all of the exams needed and everythings been fine, they never even bothered to ask me again.
Good luck and give them a call

I agree with NBN however when you call / write to them (writing is probably best) just inform them that you dont have the required grade but tell them what you have and also tell them that you would be willing to go to nightschool and get the requirement - they probably wont let you do this but its a start.

best wishes

MYT

I don't agree with any of the two postings above. Take my advice, tell them what they want to know! You could go to night school to improve your grades but all that will get you is an interview if you meet their criteria. You will still have to do the Maths and English test to get through the interview regardless of how much experience or how good you are. I have known My Travel to turn excellent people away just because they don't pass their recruitment criteria, and they have let a lot of excellent people go away. I don't know if other airlines are guilty of this??
Anyway it is their loss and another airlines benefit.

Djpsjjdod,
U say u dont agree? I wasnt telling AHW to lie!!!!!!! for gods sake all I said was to ring them AND TELL THEM..this is the only way to get an answer..I was giving an example of MY experience with getting into an airline without ALL of the exam requiement eg: GCSE's..the maths and english tests that airlines give are easy anyway and nothing to lose sleep over...If an airline thinks you are what they want and will make excellent crew then they DO often overlook something like this so she AHW has in my opinion gotta call and explain to them about her grades,it is then up to them to see how she does in her interview etc...there is more to a cabin crew interview than maths tests u know..if AHW interacts well with people and comes out well in group games and discussions then they are already halfway there.
Good Luck AHW

So...how much maths is needed once up front in the office? Does one thesedays rely solely on the computers to calculate things, or what?

U can rely on computers to a certain extent but most of them at some time 'go down' so therefore u have to do it manually..but its usually easy anyway and theres people who help who are maybe quicker at that thing..i never really go on a flight and think all the time of maths! its not really a MAJOR part but you do sometimes have manual bar counts, adding up foreign currency using your head when onboard computers go down..just normal relatively easy stuff..nothing too taxing.

AHW - my advice is: carry on regardless... When recruiting earlier this year, MYT proved they were quite flexible when they needed to be - they DID hire me after all!

If they like the whole "package", they will compromise on the odd weaker aspect of your application. Since they usually need a LOT of people, you are in with a chance if you manage to go past this internet application thing. Otherwise, just pretend you don't have access to the net and ask for a standard application form to be sent to you, or prepare your arguments convincingly and call them. Once at the assessment day, the maths test really is no big deal.

If you stick to the minimum requirements in the airline business, you'll never get anywhere!

Cheers

:)

Thanks very much for all the info!!! seems a trivial question, but i am only in the early stages of planning when/where to apply! I have another few months until I can actually persue the career but in the meantime I am doing my research and planning my photos/cv/even started a sign language course! I have always LOVED planes/flying and when I was 12 I wrote off to all the airlines for info packs! (still have them 8 years later haha tho bit dated now) i have never been niave either in thinking it will be a doddle to get in, i can see from this forum it is far from it, but anyway really appreciate all the information

This is a toughie! All I can say is consider the options and make a judgement call! I would be inclined to suggest that a well worded letter to MYT would be a good step. If you can convey enthusiasm and commitment you'll be sure to be in with a chance.

Best of luck and have a great Christmas

Id say that the maths thing, like parts of the pilots sponsorships, are in place to give a judgement on whether or not to bring you to interview. I believe that the maths is not too difficult, in fact the questions i had to answer at my interview were much harder that the sums i had to do on a flight. So therefore, what i am trying to say is that you dont need to be a maths expert to get in with an airline. As has been previously said if they think you have a teamwork attitude and a friendly personality and they think you are right for the job then thats it!

I know this doesnt help you with the app form but its just a little more insight.

I hope you are successful and i hope you enjoy being on-line. I know i did. ( i was laid off)

Anyway iv got my fingers crossed for you

Cheers

Dave

I can tell you from experince that over half the crew flying around dont have any of the qualifications that the airlines ask for i may self have none and have been flying now for 7yrs ,if i was you i would put down the requirements they ask for as dont forget competition is very high and they can be as choosey as they want if you get an interveiw thats when you excel yourself with your personility and lots of smiles you will find in this job it doesnt matter how many qualifications you have if you cant interact with others you stand no chance and believe me there are a lot of crew with degrees etc who are terrible with not only other crew but with passengers if some one like yourself who after all this time still wants 2 fly then u put down exactly what they want 2 hear best of look
