From what I heard (so may be inaccurate, although it makes sense) when you go through your recruitment process you get marked at each round until you end up with a final score.
Dependent on your final score is whether you even get to the executive review stage and then if you get on the shortlist that's how you are ranked on the shortlist.
QF then use that shortlist based on particular skills required (ie particular need for 2nd language speakers) and employ in order of highest to lowest.
This came from a FA in QF based on his knowledge, so there could be more to it or less to it - not sure....

ozskipper, that makes sense, i've heard that before from QF crew too. thanks!
Also, in regards to the LCC, some crew in other posts are predicting no recruitment for QF mainline, what does everyone think if this. Could this LCC work against shortlisters??? It's already been established that the LCC will work similar to AO as a separate business, ie not using QF shortlisters, but recruiting their own staff or using the MAM casuals etc. Some SH crew now seem to be worried (by the looks of it) that they may lose some of their flying and are looking at other options like AO, transferring to LH etc and that if they will be doing this, there will definately be no external recruitment from shortlists or off the streets? Then there are rumours January/February for external/shortlist recruitment. I realise this is all speculation as no-one really knows what is going on at the moment, but can anyone shed some light on this or have any other info?
