TightSlot, I was not taking issue with staff travel - this is something which airline staff are totally entitled to as a benefit to the hard work they give to their airline. I do not for one minute dispute that the crew I encountered were entitled to seats on that aircraft. My objection was to the fact that they were not entitled to be sat in club class when I, as a paying passenger, was. (Petty, I know - but wouldn't you be after 24 hours sat in JFK having shelled out all your savings on the holiday of a lifetime?) I also know that none of these crew were on a positioning flight or even due to report the next day. Nor do I think that a pax who holds an economy ticket has any right whatsoever to upgrade themselves - I agree with you that it is neither clever nor funny and that if everyone thought like this then your jobs would be made a whole lot more difficult than they already are.
The point that I was trying to make was that I felt your feelings towards the passengers who do "try their luck" in this fashion should also be directed towards the crew who blag their way into seats and do view it as a "cheeky little adventure", or worse, as their entitlement, when this is not always the case.
