So whats the go with Tiger these days? Still via Altera?

Assuming with the limited flying program that there is still excess crew with many standby's....?

A_View_Divine 17th Feb 2012 09:00

Still via Altara, big wait for GS 5 months between AD, I'm on the wait list, however anyone I've spoken with has spoken highly of their fellow staff so I'm holding on.

wheels_down 20th Feb 2012 09:28

Looks like a whole heap of jobs to open up in BNE, which is where the base will no doubt be...

Wheels Down,

If you are talking about this advert it does say Melbourne:)

Asphalt_Jungle 25th Feb 2012 03:15

Hang in there

Yes they are still hiring via Altara, with the ability to promote into full time Altara followed by full time Tiger.
My hours since oct/nov have been very good, feb was a slow month but it is every year. New cabin crew get good hours though as they need to build up to get off their greens.
Hopefully tiger will have both a SYD and BNE base within the next 12 months. There is no garuntee as to which will be first.
To those of you waiting, hang in there, I'm current cabin crew for tiger and the opportunity to grow in the company will happen very fast for you if you love what you do and work hard.
There are GS's that have all been promoted to Full Time Altara (have to wait for EBA to be approved before we can transition to Tiger Full Time) within their first year and some are even now Act Ups (probationary Cabin Managers)again, from being with the company in that time.
But you must work hard, management do notice and do talk.
I have so far had a very cruisy ride at Tiger but I love what I do and I believe it shows in my work.
Hope this helps if you were having any doubts
Good luck :)

wheels_down 25th Feb 2012 09:34

What makes me wonder, is they are advertising the above CC openings via their site rather than Altera, so maybe Tiger are taking over recruitment again like it was back in 2007/8

Asphalt_Jungle 26th Feb 2012 05:51

Altara will stay

I'm not 100% sure if tiger will be taking control for initial recruitment for the new bases but I know they won't get rid of Altara anytime soon. I'm sure Tiger will need full time TIGER crew for start up and a bunch of casuals but I think they will use MEL crew willing to relocate (be it permanent or temporary) then promote the casual crew at the new base to full time and so on. Can't be sure on anything really. For those of you in the industry I'm sure you'll already know (and for those who trying will learn very fast) that you can't believe everything you hear. I personally don't believe it untill it is ACTUALLY happening. 'galley FM' can be dangerous and be very careful what you repeat.
For those of you about to go into training let us know (we usually get an email when your finishing up and about to come online)
We also get emails when we are recruiting so I'll try and remember to post on here if I get one.
I'm sure there will be many AD to come and GS will be one after the other. I honestly don't think you'll have to wait too much longer

A_View_Divine 26th Feb 2012 06:21

Fingers crossed! I have resigned from my job as of this coming Friday and have been lucky enough to have been relocated within the business on a temporary contract. It would be fantastic if they brought forward the May GS but I'm sure before we know if it will be just around the corner. Thanks for all the above info!

syd16R 6th Mar 2012 23:37

Looks like Tiger Wannabees will be able to get a Cabin Crew job in Sydney now. According to the news this morning they have launched there next base in Sydney, with an extra 10 flights a day though Sydney, basing 3 x A320 here

A_View_Divine 7th Mar 2012 08:28

Frances, it has been stated by many creatable sources including the herald sun today that Tiger is expanding to a Sydney base.

The news only broke this morning.

Asphalt_Jungle 15th Mar 2012 21:51

Hey taroom, the best advise I can give is look professional and be friendly anything else you've heard forget it. Be yourself! And don't give up, I know of plenty of people that went to multiple interviews untill they got in with all airlines. I have a few friends that are about to train to do the requruitment, I think their training is the day before they see you so if I hear anything worth your knowledge I'll give you guys a heads up.
Don't forget, have fun on the day and make friends, exchange details with some that get thru, it helps to go in to training with a few friends already.
Good luck :D

So, there will be a ground school happening soon for those still waiting to be notified? So eager!!!!

Asphalt_Jungle 17th Mar 2012 02:40

Hey Pinkpetals I Havnt heard word of the next ground school, usually you guys hear about it before we do, I am surprised that they are making you wait though because we need new crew ASAP.
Taroom, I love working for tiger, the other crew really make your day sometimes. I have met some of the most amazing people online and hopefully friends for life. Also there are rumors about a BNE base in the next year so you might even get the chance to move closer to home (they might even bump you to full time faster if your willing to relocate)
The great thing about tiger is there is so much room to grow within the company with Singapore backing us and Australia needing us I'd say we're in for the long haul (pardon the terrible dad joke)

You are so positive and love reading what you write. Very inspiring for new starters. I flew Tiger twice and I have to admit, it was such a pleasure, great crew and friendly. J
Hopefully this training should start. Counting days and checking emails!!

I second that! I am patiently waiting for that email advising about the next Ground School in Melbourne! xox

Syd base

Hi, I have an invite for TT based in SYD. Any suggestions, tips etc regarding their recruitment day... I am anticipating a full on day so I have booked the night before and the night of to stay in a motel close by.. Also does anyone know if TT has a location clause in their employment contract??? Concern especially with the prices of Sydney rents.. Please let me know..

Nervous but excited.

Cross_check 27th Mar 2012 10:24

RSA

Sorry forgot to ask in previous post... Does your RSA expire??? I did one about 3 years ago will I need to do another before my recruitment day??

Asphalt_Jungle 27th Mar 2012 21:30

Cross_check

What do you mean by location clause exactly?
Your RSA should be ok. I know the QLD ones expire and VIC ones are forever( I think) but not 100% about the NSW. Just call the company you did yours with and ask.
I didn't have my CPR or first aid on my AD and I still got in.
Try not to stress yourself out too much, be yourself and try to enjoy the day. I never thought I had a chance when I went to mine so I breezed through. But now when I go for internal interviews for stuff im a nervous wreck and don't think I go so well (lucky they know me enough to realize I'm just nervous)

Also small note, I spoke to a few of the cabin crew that did the last SYD AD and they were amazed by the talent. Apparently they only turned away 2-4 people and that was mainly because they didn't have essential stuff (eg. A drivers license)

Cross_check 28th Mar 2012 12:44

Thank you

to all that have provided me advice to help calm the nerves I appreciate and give you a huge thank you. Looking forward to the day and have been a bit excited to the point I have not slept well... I hope to share the skies with you soon.. and again a Huge thank you.. LOL Coffee on me

Compared to other airlines Tigers wages are pretty good. If your starting out you'll most likely be a casual with Altara. The pay is around $20 per duty hour and about $10 per flight hour. e.g a SYD return is around a 5hr duty, 3 of those being flights hours. Therefore the pay for that would be (5hrsX$20) + (3hrsX$10) = $130 taking into account delays and holding etc so it varies.
Casuals get payed 1hr for every 4hrs of home standby. e.g 4am-4pm SBY would be 3hrs of duty pay, unless you are called in and are then payed for that duty/flight hrs
You also get a meal allowance per duty which isn't much and a percentage of sales from the inflight service, but I don't calculate these into my wages whatever I end up with is a little bonus :)
I'm full time now anyway so my pay is a little different. I found I was earning more as a casual but I prefer job security.
Duty hours are around 130 or so for the month, I've had months at max hrs (156hrs) and then months like feb/march (our slowest months) at 70hrs
That's all I can think of now, if you have any more Q's just ask
Sorry for all the incoherent rambling :P

Renee9b 5th Apr 2012 21:56

Hi all

I've just got a date for an AD with Tiger in 2 weeks time. In the email inviting me to interview, they said I have to pay a $20 admin fee on the day of interview, has anyone else had to do this?
Also, they're asking for a First Aid certificate however I dont have one. I have been crew previously so im competent at what's involved regarding first aid, but im thinking they're not going to accept me without a certificate?

I'd be grateful of any advice :)

Thanks!

Asphalt_Jungle 6th Apr 2012 00:14

Renee9b

Yes, I payed the admin fee when I did mine a year and a half ago. It is to cover the cost of the venue they use on the day. Sucks, I know, but it ended out being worth it for me.
I didn't have my CPR or first aid and I still got through. Just make them aware you are willing to renew it ASAP. I ended up doing mine through Tiger during training with a bunch of other people from the company which helped in meeting friends there before my actual start date :)

Renee9b 6th Apr 2012 01:27

Thanks for the reply!
Thats good to know about the fee, I thought it might have been a scam somehow! I'm looking forward to the day!
Do you know anyone currently at Tiger that is on a temporary work visa? I have recently moved here from London and I dont have permanent residency. It says on the job advert that you just need the right to work here, is that definately the case?

Also, because the role is recruited by Altara and not Tiger, does this mean you wouldnt get any staff travel benefits?

Sorry for the lots of questions :)

Thanks again :ok:

Asphalt_Jungle 6th Apr 2012 10:51

Renee9b

Im not 100% sure about what they might say on the day but there are a few people that don't have perminent residency working with us now.
And no, Altara don't offer staff travel at this time. But there is room for promotion into Tiger full time which does offer staff travel. You can also buddy up with a tiger full timer and get them to put you on their list :P
And no problem, don't mind the Q's, I think it's very smart your doing your research before jumping into it.
The thing is, flying just isnt for some people and they don't realize it. Some change their mind on the assessment day, some during training, some after their first supernumery and some after being there for a few months. All for different reasons. But I love what I do, who I work with and who I work for (most days). They say if you love what you do you'll never work a day in your life, I believe you only understand that when you've found it :)

Renee9b 10th Apr 2012 01:00

Oh cool, fingers crossed I have the right visa then! I would of thought it should be fine as its not a student visa.
Very excited for the AD now, hope I get through! I know how intense some of the cabin crew ADs can be!

Renee9b 10th Apr 2012 02:31

Does anyone have any info on how the AD goes actually? Is it the usual, group interview then one on one interviews?

Cross_check 12th Apr 2012 10:52

The Assessment Day

Did a bit of research so I am not saying this is 100% correct however,
the information they gave us as in invite is what it is about.

A session about the job and what is expected.. Working for ground crew previously there is about $100 cost involved with getting your ASIC which allows you to access Air Side - often referred to as 'the red card' - this involves security checks through various government departments and normally requested from the company as soon as your offered as it can take up to 6 weeks and you can't really work until then. I did my first aid and RSA in the last couple of weeks to ensure currency. Unsure re: Visa as long as you have rights to work in Australia. Student visa's allow work for a set peiod of time.

An assessment day is a day of us being assessed and show your true self. Which is better then one I had that you attended for only an hour and they seemed to assess you totally by then. I have heard there are group exercises and interviews but the thing that has echo'd is just be yourself and enjoy your day I have heard that TT staff are lovely..

I think you have mentioned that your x-crew.. just remember that you are going into a low cost model which is a different world. Plus I have had travel benefits for four years and they are not what they are all cracked up to be.. I find it easier now days especially domestically to just enjoy the freedom of cheap tickets.

highfly101 13th Apr 2012 04:44

Just adding the cost of ASIC(redcard) is now $233 +50 deposit and depending what port you are based in may need to pay for a door access swipe. Expect to pay upfront for all airlines (except qantas) at least $600 incl-medical and asic (qantas process there own so therefore only pay for medical)

shortfinal737 13th Apr 2012 05:36

Not quite true... Virgin do not expect you to pay for your ASIC either.

Asphalt_Jungle 13th Apr 2012 22:56

I can't remember how much I payed starting up but I don't think it was anywhere near $600. My medical was well under $100 and the ASIC was only just over $200. Virgin require a much more in depth medical so theirs can cost up to $400, don't quote me on that though.
Also we recently received an email from our CEO saying that he would be the last one at the company to pay for his ASIC. Now I'm not 100% if that includes Altara staff or not, but I hope so :)

highfly101 19th Apr 2012 18:03

For those who work for TT currently , are you provided with water and a crew meal/ snacks ?

Asphalt_Jungle 21st Apr 2012 01:41

highfly101

Yes, we are supplied with unlimited amounts of 1.5L bottles of water. We are encouraged to drink at least one per duty ( 2 if it is a PER/CNS or 4 sector day). and we are not supplied with crew meals or snacks but we get payed a meal allowance per duty which goes into your pay for the month. We have an oven on board which gets used a lot. We bring those foil tins with left overs from home and I've even done cookies on our back of the clocks :P

highfly101 22nd Apr 2012 03:33

Seriously ... Do they roster at least breaks on turnarounds for you to get off and buy food? Sounds like its slave labour a little bit and is it true they illegally dont pay you during training?

Asphalt_Jungle 23rd Apr 2012 08:12

Highfly101

No, we currently do not have scheduled breaks during turn arounds to get off and purchase food. Our break time is when we are flying after service and rubbish collection. Sometimes our flight schedule does alow us a little time to grab something from the terminal but that's more of a treat.

It's hardly slave labour. I find my job very rewarding. Although, it isn't for every one. Yes, there will be times when you are on your feet for 12hrs. Yes, there are times when your plans are interrupted due to delays and changes. Yes, there will be times when you work 6 days in a row with little more than minimum rest.
But gladly, I can still safely say, I LOVE MY JOB
They have policies and procedures in place to protect us and our health. But it is also our job to keep an eye on it too.

As for: Illegally not paying during training. Do you really think they would get away with that? Especially after the grounding. Successful ground school students are given a cheque on graduation day. I won't lie, it isn't a lot, but it was enough for me to live on and I do not live at home with my family.

I hope the information I have given you was useful. I also hope that it has helped you to become a little more positive towards Tiger and their requirement and training process.
:)

cabin manager

Hey anyone in the know on the direct entry cabin manager positions in Sydney?

I Had applied, however I got an invite to the regular cabin crew open day coming up? Anyone else also applied initially as a Cabin Manager?

highfly101 27th Apr 2012 06:49

All I know is what I have been told by current tiger employee's and you would make more money working at mcdonalds full time..Like normal airlines pay at least for cabin crew a fortnight base is 1500 +allowances and you get meals included I guess pay peanuts get monkey's

Asphalt_Jungle 28th Apr 2012 00:40

I can assure you we are payed more than McDonalds full time employees.
I can tell you know that our base is a little more than virgins. But they don't get payed for flight hours only over nights. So if your not keen on spending time away from home, pay wise, tiger is much more worth it.
And as for your 'pay peanuts get monkeys' remark. I suggest you leave this thread as you seem to believe you are too good for tiger. I won't be answering anymore of your questions. I'm here to help those who are genuinely interested in joining tiger. A company I am more than happy to work for as long as they'll allow me too. :)

Has anyone heard anything about the recuitment day in Melbourne on May 8th? I applied and cant stop checking my emails its driving me bonkers!

Also, I have an interview for Jetstar and hopefully Tiger... of course it depends on who takes me and who doesnt... but if I get both... does anyone know any pros and cons of either of the airlines? I know Tiger pay more, but is there anything else?
:)
