Gulf Air

The Gulf Air Thread

Nomade 14th Sep 2006 22:02

And the suggested topic woud be...?

Nomade 21st Sep 2006 02:34

Good luck

Mahdi,
best of luck to you. This sounds like a classic "the grass is greener on the other side" scenario.
I sincerely hope it will turn out that way for you.
Something must have seriously upset you, you sound so angry.
Moving on in this case is definitely the best option, for you and also for those who choose to stay. Nobody likes to hear negative comments and unconstructive criticism. I guess complaining is human nature and a favourite sport in this industry, but it is also draining to the poor souls who are at the receiving end.
Have some mercy.
 Congratulations on your making a choice to change what no longer suits you.

Can someone please answer me a few questions!!!
I just got successful at the interview here in Budapest, and I was wondering if its a good idea to leave everything behind and move to Bahrain?! How much is the salary for the start? Is it true it is only US$1200?
What happenes if during my probation time I say I don't want to work here, I don't like it and I want to go home? Will they let me?Do I have to pay my costs?
Do they take your passport away for the probation time???
Please, its my life am dealing with right now, if you could give me some answers, it would really made it easier for me!!!!!
Thanks Guys!!!

desert pink rose 25th Sep 2006 21:59

CMJ,
yes the salary is around 1200usd.
Anytime you want to go home you can go,they will not charge you anything and they will never keep your passport not even during training.

CMJ 26th Sep 2006 07:08

Gulf Air - Bad, really???

The first time they promised me that i ll earn more than 1500Usd but in the end of the first month they gave less than 950 Usd. When i asked them why they just told me that because of the costs what they invest into me!I was thinking can this be true??? They wont let me to go a fu..in away because of the contract which i still dont get... Which means that i had no chance to live!! Now i am at home and im sure that i ll never use this company again even for flying. the 3 months took more than 4 and a half. I finished without any money because the food was one of the worst that i ever taste. The city was soo boring. All the peoples look at me like a poor unlucky thing

I felt myself like a worker in a Subway :D

Now i m on my way to work for Virgin Atlantic whose promises much more money and many insurances. Do you know sthing about them??

melody81 26th Sep 2006 07:54

ohh! i find another topic just about the Virgin! Thanx a lot :ugh:

desert pink rose 26th Sep 2006 09:05

CMJ,
during training, they used to give me around 10 euros a day.It was enough to buy food.Bahrain it's a very safe country...I am sure you will enjoy it....
Give it a try....if you don't like it you can always leave....I am been leaving there for nearly 7 years.....I was in GF for 6 years....

pinkpanther1980 26th Sep 2006 10:56

Hi all! Just a few thing i want u to know!

Additional allocations were not paid at all during the three months
probation. Referring to some administrational problems my passport has been
reserved for more than two months. After declaring my will to resign at the
end of the probation they requested to pay back the cost of investments. I
am absolutelly disappointed in the whole company. I will never again work
for such a company. People considered me a homeless. I haven't experienced
any kind of appreciation. I was instructed as a servent of everyone.

good luck :=

skywaytoheaven 26th Sep 2006 16:46

Yes Gulf air is consolidating as a regional airline while maintaining key medium long/haul routes. Emirates has alot more money thrown at it than Gulf air, its not rocket science.

CMJ 27th Sep 2006 16:32

Decision

Hi Guys!

Well to tell you the truth I have read all the posts here on the forum about Gulf Air and I made my decision finally about moving to Bahrain!!!
My decision is that I AM STAYING on my butt!!!:hmm:
I understand that the more people are the more opinions will be!
But in the end you can see that Gulf Air is rather on the dark side...
I have so many things here in my hometown and I don't want to burn everything up just because of Gulf A.
There are to many things which have fog around it and it is imposible to rely on them!!!
So wish you luck for the future and I really hope that all of you will find the best airline and the best place to live!

Cheers:)

HI,

You are doing the right thing!! I am leaving next month to go back to UK and work for British Airways. I flew for 4yrs in the UK previously and wish I had not left. I have never been so skint in my life with bills still to pay back home. Unless you have no other bills/commitments in your home country,do not even bother!!

Yeah and it is so boring too, unless you have lived a very sheltered life!

Swimming

The swimming excercise is not hard but you do need to be able to swim and by that i mean float and move not like professional butterfly strokes. As long as you can make it from one end to the other you will be fine. The rest of the excercise you will have a life jacket on, but if your not comfortable in the water this might be a little scary. I would practise but don't stress about it.

Passport

Hi

They do take your passport on the first day of induction and you get it back the day you finish your training. If at any time you decide to leave Bahrain during training they will get your passport back. They need to take your passport in order to fill it with the residence visa. And they money is just as they said but its pretty fun once you get out here and you do make alot of friends.

Hi!!!

Im currently with Gulf Air and I can honestly tell you that you have to experience it for yourself. Some people say really bad things about the airline and some people say really good things. Its like everything in life. When your in training school you get your basic pay which I think is 230 Dinars plus 70 dinars every 2 weeks for food and stuff. They have some very nice accomodation here and most of the crew are very friendly. Bahrain is still growing and not as big as probably your use too. There are many nice cafe's, resturants and pubs/bars. There are also many nice hotels where you can spend the day. SOme of them we get into free with our id. Also if your into your nights out there are always ladys nights on and you usually drink free. The most popular place charges 2bd for all you can drink. I love living here and have met a tons of nice friends I will always keep in touch which. The local people who live here are friendly and its not strict like the UAE. Hope this helps

Please stop quoting huge tracts of previous posts in each of your messages. there is no need to quote something directly unless your response requires it.:ugh:

NooNoo 4th Oct 2006 13:46

;) :) Hi guys... Gotta say, Gulf Air are a terrible employer. I worked for 2 years without being allowed to take any leave, they treat u with no respect whatsoever and the money is dreadful!!!!!!! The majority of the crew are fed up and their staff turnover must b the highest in the world!! On the plus side though, you do get to go to some great destinations (even if its only for 12 hours!)

zagloud 5th Oct 2006 17:11

Life is about enjoyment

I have been with Gulf Air for 11 years.
Alot of you guys are obviously writing in as you have been upset by something , either not getting your request or too many BOm t,rounds..
Gulf Air salary is indeed not high but lets look at this realisticly... what you earn is your pocket money, when you are earning more in the UK ,take away all your costs, rent, petrol driving to work, dry cleaning bill, medications when ill, electricity, telephone and of course tax.. now you tell me, are you that much better off financially ?
Answer is NO, if you say yes, you are mistaken.
Arab people are warm and hospitable and eager to share their culture.Like everywhere there are individuals who are not like this.
True , Bahrain nightlife cannot be compared to UK nightlife, but unlike UK you can go out any night of the week and with free entry into bars and clubs and many ladies nights with free drinks, youre laughing.
Social life in Bahrain is what you make it.If you enjoy outdoor sporting events, horseriding ,swimming, running, cycling, walking, water skiing you will be in your element. If you enjoy hanging out with friends at any of the many and varied coffee shops or going out for meals.. you can get any type of food, any time you want and for a price that is so cheap you never have to cook again.
CMJ i think you made a big mistake in changing your mind, you didnt even come and see for yourself, you just listened to negative peoples views. Why did you go to the interview in the first place?
For those of you wanting to join Gulf Air... follow your dreams.

zagloud 5th Oct 2006 17:25

and about the leave ...

All crew are entitled to 36 days leave a year, leave must be taken at least once a year and for a minimum of 15 days.
Passports are only taken initially to arrange for your visa and residence permit and as soon as these are done your passport is returned to you.
You are able to leave at any time during training if you decide to and your airfare home is covered by Gulf Air , you do not pay anything back to the company.:D

desert pink rose 5th Oct 2006 17:42

Well done Zaloud!!!!!
:D

NooNoo 6th Oct 2006 13:23

I'm sorry but what utter nonsense you are talking!!
I don't know what sort of job in the UK would leave you worse off than working for Gulf Air.

It is true that you can live very cheaply in Bahrain, and thats great, however, for those of us who chose to have a life outside of BJs and JJs (the main bar and nightclub where free drinks are on offer most night), "Pocket Money" does not suffice!!

As for the issues that a lot of people have with Gulf Air as an employer. I don't think that it is as simple as a matter of 2 many Bombay t-arounds!! This is part of the job, and although the pax on these routes can be a little trying to say the least, this is all part of the exprience.

In my experience, the problem is that Gulf Air do not deliver what they promise to their employees. In terms of money, holiday, accomodation and working conditions, i.e. 3 crew to care of 257 economy pax!

I just think that people should be aware of what they are getting themselves into before they go. Much lighter workload, better pay and decent working conditions with many UK airlnes.

Grrr.

NooNoo 6th Oct 2006 13:40

Oh yeah... I forgot to add.... my moan is about Gulf Air as an employer and emphatically NOT about Bahrain as a place to live. I have never been to such a friendly and welcoming country in my life. The Bahraini people are, in general, warm, generous and extremely helpful.

It is true that nightlife is limited to 1 or 2 cheesy venues or private parties, but it is the people you are with that make it enjoyable. And after all, there is more to life. The restaurants are great but they are certainly not cheap.

There are a great many things to do in Bahrain, its just a shame that while working for GF, you rarely have the time, energy or money to do any of them!!!!:)

Earning your trust 6th Oct 2006 18:21

good on u zagloud

good on u zagloud....i agree with a hundred %\

ALL I CAN SAY IS COLOUR YOUR SKY WITH GULF AIR

zagloud 8th Oct 2006 00:08

NooNoo no no

Its a shame that you obviously had such a negative experience with GF.I worked for an airline in the Uk where we did not sit the entire flight, we would eat our meals top of decent in 3 mins, after landing we would load all the ovens for the return sector, clean all seat pockets and 1 unlucky crew got to stand under the wing and direct passengers(in the rain / snow / sun ),our onboard service continued the entire flight. The same cannot be said for GF crew where on most flights we have the luxury of sitting ,eating our meals, reading the papers and chatting with our collegues.
3 crew for 257 passengers is indeed hard work and although happens more than we like during the busy summer months is not a normal thing.Crew shortages are common in all airlines at peak times.
I consider buying a meal of for example chicken biryani for equiv. of less than $4 pretty cheap, or thai green curry ,rice and wine for less than $13 pretty cheap..the list goes on.
Crew are accomodated in luxury apartments , and as previously mentioned by another member most are equiped with gyms and pools, all with internet access, microwave,tv,dvd player, satelite, washing machine,24 hours security and all are fully furnished.
A word of advice to all those either already flying with GF or thinking of coming to join our "family", if ever you have a grievence or something that you think is unfair bring it to the attention of those in the office who have the authority to bring about a change or explain the whys and together work out a solution.
Seek and ye shall find... open your eyes to the great things you have already and dont waste time on the countless things that you lack.
Happy flying and stay safe in the skies and on the ground.

geetha 9th Oct 2006 14:23

open house..

hi..

anyone out here planning to attend the open interviews taking place at Al Maha Rotana Suites, AUH on 27th dis month?

farflung 14th Oct 2006 14:50

I spent 8 years working for GF and have been back in the UK for a year. If you are 21 years old and want to experience living abroad and having some fun, then join GF. Bahrain is a great place to live and you will have a brilliant time. The accomodation has greatly improved and you wont have any bills to pay except for your mobile phone.
If you are looking for a company which provides a good salary, career progression and a company that cares about its employees, dont go. Its good experience to get a good flying job in the UK but it is very hard work. As for the post which suggested airing your grievances to the management - dont bother. They do not care and they know that you are easily replaceable. There will always be plenty of girls who cant get into BA or Emirates.
I hope that things improve with the new management. It couldnt be any worse.
I dont regret my time there as I made some great friends and I still miss Bahrain. GF could be good with a new management.
Hi to my ex colleagues out there :)

ChocolatBabe 26th Oct 2006 08:22

Trousers?

Hi all! Just a quick question. Does Gulf allow their CCs to choose between trousers and skirts as their uniform? Thanks in advance. :)

desert pink rose 26th Oct 2006 10:28

ChocolatBabe,
you can have 4 skirts or 2 skirts,2trousers.But you can only have trousers if you can fit in a size 8 or 10 without the trousers being tight....

bya 26th Oct 2006 12:00

hello

hi everybody :)
i would like to attend the open day interview in bangkok next month. my problem is i'm not from thailand but i'm willing to go there to attend the interview. when i tried to register fill up the online application form, this is what appears - IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO LIVE AND WORK IN A SPECIFIC COUNTRY, DO NOT APPLY
does this mean that if i'm not a resident of thailand, i shouldn't attend? will i receive an invite to the interview?
i'll be spending quite a $$ if i attend so i would just like to make sure that they'll talk to me at least :)
thanks

flyoneday 26th Oct 2006 13:38

I think you should try apply from the Airline's website itself. It should not be a problem. I suspect you are trying through aviationjobsearch huh?

Hi there,

I am planning to attend the open day interview in Dubai on January 27, 2007. Can anybody tell me anything about the recruitment process?

Thanks,
Aliyyah

vfenext 3rd Dec 2006 17:20

NooNoo obviously has a serious axe to grind with Gulf Air and the argument was holding water right up to saying,

In terms of money, holiday, accomodation and working conditions, i.e. 3 crew to care of 257 economy pax!
Not only did this not happen, but if it did it would mean the aircraft departed with less than the LEGAL minimum crew on board. Sorry to burst your ball NooNoo but if you are going to make up lies you need to check your facts first. On the subject of passports, GF will never ever confiscate your pport and you will be free to get it back at any time. The delays are down to the government immigration Dept who can be slow to issue your residence/working visa's.

Gulf Air

How come Gulf Air only accepts applications from males who are either of Bahraini or Omani national?

AHRS 26th Dec 2006 14:45

How comes all other nations prefer to hire their own nationals?

It's called charity begins at home! Girls are exempt because they can't recruit enough of their own due to cultural prohibitions.

Still... Emirates, Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways recruit guys from all over the world. Only interested in Gulf Air as they aren't too different from these airlines.
