I got through to references and then have been told not progressing further. Is this a common thing? Devastated to say the least.

Yes it can be.
I have been trying for a certain airline for 14 years and have the most perfect references and I have not gotten through with one airline when I have experience at 3 other airlines.
Don't give up! When it is meant to happen, it will!

out of curiosity what airline?
