I cant get references .... help!

hi everyone, as we all know most (all?) airlines require full and detailed work references of every job you've had over the last 5 years. My current employer - not a problem, without being cocky i'd expect a glowing reference from them, and from the place I worked before that. But that only takes me back to 18 months ago. Before then I worked at Woolworths for 4 years. Clearly I wont be able to get a reference from them! Help! Is there any hope other than waiting another 3.5 years to start applying?! xx

Those two references should be fine, plus maybe one more from one of those recent places.

I think you may have the security check work history mixed up with the employment references that the airline does to check your recent work history stands up and your suitability to the role.

The security work check is done by Aviation Security as a background check before your Airside pass can be given to you, basically to ensure your whereabouts for the past (about) 10 years and that you havent been involved in any suspicious activities.

You my also think that just because they ask the referees to have been involved with you within the last five years that they want them going back that far, this is actually just to ensure they have had recent contact with you and your work. Applications are open to 18yo, none of them are going to have work history dating back to when they were 13.

When I needed references for my airside pass a few years ago I had a similar problem. One of the companys I worked for had been sold to a new owner and had a completely new management team and therefore nobody there could confirm that I worked there. At the time I contacted the recruitment team and they told me just to provide reference details for somebody who could confirm what I was doing during that period. I know other people who have had to do the same for short periods when they were on holiday or something in between jobs. So basically as long as you can provide a character reference from somebody who is willing to verify what you were doing during that period.

That is what worked for me. The best thing to do would be to contact your new employer and discuss it with them and ask for their advice.

Hope that helps a little!
