European Corporate Pilot Shortage ?
So, is this a legit thing ?:

In my opinion, the problem is definately not the Pilot shortage in the Business Aviation sector.
The problem is the reluctance of owners and operators to spend money for type ratings to suitable candidates. Everybody is looking for rated guys. But if no rated Pilot is searching for a job or willing to change because he or she is happy with his/her current position the operators speak about Pilot shortage. I am sure there is more than enough Pilots available and willing to change for a bigger/better aircraft or better contract. So pay them nicely and pay for a Rating. Easy as it is. Just my 5 cents. |

...well after 20 years of flying I'm not sure I have experienced 'pilot shortage,' - I've experienced pay for your type, pay for your laundry, pay for your renewal, pay for your flights to an interview - in an operation who are short of pilots. I can't remember when I last saw an ad for NTR Gulfstream /Bombardier/ Daz-aux , pilots required for an operation ( where I can go home every couple of weeks). Wouldn't mind swapping my type for something where there are more than 67 left flying - I suffer from plane shortage ! So when this gig goes bang as we all know they do sooner or later, then what...£££. Sitting unemployed listening to pilot shortage articles zzzz

It's not yet a pilot shortage, but I think that the job shortage is over. Two years ago inexperienced licensed pilots in Europe would have done anything to secure a first job, even paying for it.
Now newbies can definitely find a job and have their rating paid. |
+1 that most operators advertise for TR'ed crews
Unfortunately I was trying to get in, but nevertheless you have double thoughts about operators that prefer not to pay their pilots their initial training. If they are cheap on that, will they keep maintenance standards high enough!? Will they hire supporting services and enough staff or will it be a 24/7/365 thing? So eventually some of us change our aim towards airlines. |
There is no shortage of pilots, only shortage of good contracts and T&Cs. If there will ever be a pilot shortage (Europe) the solution is easy - offer above average T&Cs with a proper pension plan and budget for extra crew to cover planned leave for your crew and there will not be any issues filling the seats. Another thing, stop recruiting type ratings and start recruiting the right people. CP |
Some business jet operators do pay for the type rating. It's not out of pure generosity: they bond the pilot by contract to stay at their service for some time.

Well, three types on my licence at the moment, all paid by those I fly for, no bonds at all, ever. I have one class rating I pay for, though I charge $450 a day for the odd bit of work I do on it, but it’s mostly for fun. I’d say: get clever, be bold, do deals. If we all did that, we’d all be happier and wealthier. But there are many who aren’t clever, or bold, or capable of doing deals. |
I'm the worst negotiator/bargainer I've ever met. I'll admit it.
Maybe that has been one of the reasons why I was slower than others when it came to career progression. |
