Being a passenger aboard a ferry flight...
 

Hi! I am an engineering 20 year-old student and a private pilot too. I would just know if it would be possible to find a pilot who would agree to have a passenger aboard his airplane during a ferry flight. I already know one who made several transatlantic ferry flights, but he is too old now to do another ferry flight. He just said me that many ferry pilots would prefer flying with another person aboard even if she is not a commercial pilot. So: do you know some pilots who would maybe agree to get me aboard their airplane for a ferry flight (no matter of the destination and the departure point)? (I am seeking this kind of experience for August 2017).

I'm sure there are people who ferry aircraft who would have no problem taking you. Whether they would "remember" to insure you and pay you is another thing..... Get the owners approval too.

Yes for sure! Of course, I would pay for insurances, but the main problem is taking part in the flight costs (I am not sure my bank would enjoy paying for example half of a 20hrs trans-Atlantic flight aboard a Beech90..;) ). I met once a ferry pilot who agreed to get a passenger (who just had to pay for insurance) on board because he never wanted to make a ferry flight alone.

Some CJs are single pilot if your talking Jets so it would be a case of making sure the ferry insurance covered you

Single Pistons? The owner often go along with the Ferry Pilots

I am sure as you have a PPL he could put you down as a safety pilot and most insurance would buy that if the aircraft doesn't need two

@ Pace: The airplane doesn't matter, I would be really grateful even if it is a Piper J3 :) ). Yes, I've made this post because I have some examples of PPL who did so, and my Flight School bought a PA28 a few years ago and the ferry pilot looked for a passenger to ferry the Airplane (it was expected to be a TransAtlantic flight threw Greenland, Ireland...), but because he didn't found any "passenger"/or/safety pilot, he decided to make a really long flight from Florida to Azores and then from Azores to Europe.

This is too serious to joke about... You might well be left stranded in the arctic a few hundred or more pounds out of pocket.. that's if you even survive the flight..

If I may, I would just like to add belatedly my 2p-worth to this interesting thread. I no longer ferry aircraft transatlantic; in fact, I no longer fly personally anywhere. But my experiences, when persuaded ‘as a favour’ or by contract wording, to carry a passenger on a ferry flight, were not always of the happy variety. In short, you never knew quite what you were getting (into).

In particular, a passenger’s likely action (or inaction) in the event of an emergency was unknown. Yet it was still an additional responsibility on me to look after them, land, sea and air. They had an unfortunate propensity to confuse role (pax) and status (proud owner) resulting sometimes in unexpected actions, like taking the liberty of fiddling with ‘their’ GPS, auto-pilot, fuel tanks or radios, not always noticed by myself at the time. And, for some, hearing the word ‘NO’ said to them was clearly alien .. and seen as a challenge. Language differences magnify these things too.

On one memorable occasion, approaching N Scotland from Reykjavik for refuelling in a SEP, my pax suddenly ‘requested’ I divert to Heathrow ! I declined, but it quickly became an awkward, heated, and potentially mutinous discussion in a very confined space. Another pax was clearly unhappy en route about fuel use beyond half-tanks, which made route planning particularly awkward and frustrating. How can one forecast such situations ?

So, while I can see that a transatlantic ferry flight might be the trip of a lifetime for many, on not entirely selfish grounds, I did my best to persuade owners that it might not be for them, all things considered. TBH the ferry pilot has enough to do without random and unwelcome pax-driven demands being introduced to the mix.

I perfectly understand what you mean and I know that getting a passenger aboard is often a boredom for ferry pilots because they always need to look after him... (this is why I didn't received many PM ;) ). Moreover, if the pax is the owner, it is a really tricky situation (the guy on the left seat is the captain aboard he plane, but the other guy on the right seat is "the captain" of the change purse). As a non-commercial and -lets say the truth- "baby" pilot, I would never try to impose my choice or my ideas... (and I'll not be the owner ;) )
