Learjet 45s grounded by FAA

August 14, 2003 -- The Federal Aviation Administration yesterday grounded the popular mid-sized Learjet 45 because of a potential defect in its tail section that could send the superlight aircraft into a steep dive.
The FAA order, which affects 222 twin-engine Model 45s, is expected to remain in effect through the end the month, and possibly longer.

The FAA gave owners until Saturday to get their aircraft to a repair station to replace the horizontal stabilizer actuator assembly, which helps regulate the plane's up and down movements. Agency officials said a screw-and-nut assembly in the stabilizer was brittle and could fracture - making it impossible to control. http://www.nypost.com/news/nationalnews/3253.htm
