Ground prox nuisance alerts

Hi all

I was chatting to one of our biz jet pilots today prior to going on a weather radar flight tests and he just commented on (E)GPWSs in general on biz jets.
He said that due to the biz jets not usually having cockpit doors (Hawker 125 in his case) that nuisance alerts from GPWSs could be quite clearly heard in the cabin. This was somewhat disconcerting for his passengers and they didnt look too happy when they got off even though the approach was quite normally executed.

Anyone else had a similar look of "you trying to kill us", due to a nuisance GPWS or TCAS alert?

I've been a PAX in the back when the TCAS has gone off. Was a bit surprising and I expect if you heard a GPWS warning you'd wonder what was going on.

Our TCAS and GPWS are both very loud. We often get a "TRAFFIC!" and to a pax with no knowledge of what it means, it could scare him.

We have the same open door problem.

As for the GPWS, on approaches where the terrain is rising steeply we can get it, or even going a few feet below the glide just before touchdown.

I consider it a nuisance not as much to me but because I know we are not the only ones to listen. But for safety, I would not like to fly without TCAS nor GPWS.

I am looking forward to try TAWS one day, is it widespread in use yet?

Do you mean TAWS as in the Universal system or any generic ground prox with a forward looking capability ie Universal TAWS or Honeywells EGPWS?

EGPWS is pretty much the dominant system as far as Hawker 125s are concerned. The 60 second caution/30 second warning is useful but the main feature is the terrain display on the EFIS or FMS which provides excellent situational awareness.

I only know of two 125s with a Universal TAWS.

I am thinking of the type of TAWS where you can see as the background a computer generated picture of obstacles, ground and sky instead on you PFD instead of just an amber/cyan horizon. I saw it in a magazine, but I don't know whether it is still in the development stage or really exists.

Yep it exists and is certified.
To get the full 3D perspective view you require certain types of Universal FMS, some of which have video cards so that TAWS will display on the FMS or the MFD/PFD, which also needs to be Universal type.
Get the operator to buy FPIDS, TAWS and a UNS-1* FMS and it will work and look great.
