EDIT: too slow...
EDIT2: the article from "Aeroflap" does not contain a lot of meat. If you search for the term "policia federal fortaleza cocaina aeronave" you will find a plethora of articles in Brazilian news websites, providing much more detail!

There's even a video of the Police asking the passenger and captain to open one of the suitcases. They knew they were in deep ****.

The Federal Police of Brazil seized this Wednesday at Pinto Martins airport, in Fortaleza, more than a ton of cocaine hidden in packages inside 24 suitcases, belonging to a Spanish passenger, which were to be shipped to Brussels, Belgium. The aircraft left Ribeirão Preto, in the interior of São Paulo, and made a technical refueling stopover in Recife to continue its journey. I would still stop in Lisbon before heading to Brussels.
The suspects tried to flee before the Brazilian police approached. The police action was filmed and, in the images, it is possible to see the moment when the agent asks one of the passengers to open the suitcase on the table. He tries to get the agent to let him open another suitcase instead, but the agent insists. The drug was hidden in 1200 plastic blocks inside 24 suitcases. The test was done and confirmed it was cocaine. In total this is 1,304 kg of cocaine.
The aircraft was recently purchased by ACM Airlines. A 60-year-old Spanish passenger from the region of Asturias and the commander of the aircraft, a 48-year-old Turk, were arrested in the act of international drug trafficking. When questioned, the Spanish passenger said that he had 24 suitcases because he was going on work to Guarulhos (São Paulo) and later said he was going on tourism. The other three crew members (a Turkish woman and two men) were taken to the Federal Police headquarters to give statements. The Federal Police were already monitoring the Turkish aircraft when it left Spain for Brazil. Authorities believe that it was in Ribeirão Preto that the jet was fueled with the drug.

Naughty
Turkish exec jets and crews were involved in the recent escape of Carlos Ghosn from Tokyo via Istanbul. Now this, a big criminal event. It seems that the Turkish authorities may be a wee bit lax in certain areas

Some months ago a Falcon 900 coming up from the Sao Paulo area for a crossing into Europe had one of its throttle levers jammed.
The Capt decided to make a stop, if I remember correctly, in Fortaleza, and have the issue checked before proceeding with the crossing of the Atlantic.
Some hundreds of kilos of extra "payload" were found in various compartments in the aircraft acessible via panels that can be opened for maintenance action, inside and outside of the aircraft.
Some time later the aircraft eventually made it back to its base in Europe. Some weeks later on a routine maintenance check some "payload" was still found onboard the aircraft.

...and because of these thugs we are getting more and more problems in private aviation!
I mean, how stupid are these smugglers? Yes, dozens of identical suitcases loaded onto a private jet from Brazil to Europe. That's completely normal, right!

It's the responsibility of the customs, not the Captain, to clear the aircraft. This doesn't preclude the PIC of a rational evaluation of the pax and content of baggage and cargo.

Anyone who has ever worked in this industry know the pain of punters bringing ridiculous amounts of luggage and this would have been a huge issue….
