N2SA GIV Accident

Taken from another thread......

NTSB Identification: DCA12WA037
14 CFR Non-U.S., Non-Commercial
Accident occurred Sunday, February 12, 2012 in Bukavu, Congo
Aircraft: GULFSTREAM AEROSPACE G-IV, registration: N2SA
Injuries: 4 Fatal,8 Minor.
This is preliminary information, subject to change, and may contain errors.

On February 12, 2012 at about 1120 UTC, a Gulfstream, G-IV, registration N2SA, operated by Trident Aviation of Wilmington, Delaware, crashed at Bukavu-Kamenbe Airport (BKY), Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The domestic private flight departed Kinshasa with an intermediate stop at Goma to enplane passengers and to refuel. During the landing at BKY, the airplane overran the runway, went down an embankment and came to rest in a ravine. Of the 12 persons on board, there were four fatalities, including the pilot, copilot and two passengers. The airplane was substantially damaged and there was no fire.
Has anyone heard about a possible cause for this accident?

Do you read French?

M. Okana, one of the head of RVA (Régie des voies aériennes) which manage around 50 airports in Congo, said that the G-IV touched down 1200m down the 2000m runway.
One thing I would like to know is wether or not the spoilers were deployed at one point (automatic on the G-IV if both throttle are idle and either WOW condition or anti-skid GEN spools to between 60/70MPH).
Pictures of N2SA show that they were retracted.

The translation does not add anything useful to our understanding of what happened...

Following the crash of aircraft, which has cost the life of the hon katumba Mwanke, the Ministry of Transport has suspended the authorization for overflight of the Congolese territory granted to the company Air Katanga owner of the aircraft difficult terrain as well as to the other company Katanga Wings, pending on the outcome of the diligent investigation to shed light on the said crash.

Landing clearance and overflight given to companies and Katanga Katanga Wings Air is temporarily suspended pending the outcome of the investigation to be undertaken to elucidate the causes of the crash that occurred Sunday, February 12, 2012 at Kavumu airport in the province of South Kivu, according to a decision Monday by the Minister of Transport and communication channels, Joseph Martin Kitumba, after the meeting he chaired in his study with the heads of the Board airway (RVA), the Civil Aviation Authority of the DRC (AAC) and the study group transport (GET).

A joint commission of inquiry comprising, firstly, the Congolese experts and, secondly, the American experts will be established to elucidate the causes of the crash of the aircraft of American manufacture. Minister for Kitumba, the meeting aimed to analyze the causes of the crash and pending investigations to be conducted, to take other measures to prevent the kind of crashes occurring.

According to the CEO have the RVA, Justin Okana, the aircraft took off from Lubumbashi to Kinshasa with a stop at the airport in Bukavu Kavumu. It was after a bad landing that the crash occurred, he advised. The pilot of this aircraft touched the runway at Kavumu airport at 1200m while the runway is 2000m, added Mr. Okana, stressing that the driver has used only 800 meters for landing.

This, he said, is insufficient to stop the aircraft that ended up in a ravine. In relation to the investigation to be conducted, the AAC will try at first to reconstruct the facts, including finding the black box recorder and the tape of recent communications between the pilot and control tower, which are essential clues to elucidate the causes of the crash, said its Deputy Director General Hyppolite have Mwaka.

It also points out that this crash has killed five people including the member Augustin Katumba Mwanke, the pilot and copilot Americans who also died in the crash. For other officials, Finance Minister Augustine Matata Ponyo, the Goodwill Ambassador Antoine Ghonda Cisambo Marcelin and the governor, the danger is over. It was also noted that this aircraft was carrying 10 passengers.

The aircraft has 16000lbs of fuel when departing Goma and it was a 12min flight @ FL180.
