Jump Seat/Observer Seat

Does your aircraft have a jumpseat, and if so, do you ever invite the owner to ride in the jumpseat? A couple of days ago, I had the privilege of riding the jump seat from cruise all the way to the ramp, and it was a delightful experience for me. I've been on the seat before, only when the crew invites me, and I consider it a privilege.

The work they do is simply amazing.

GLEX has a jumpseat and I frequently put passengers in it when they ask. Once going into Aspen, I put a passenger in it--he was very appreciative and amazed.

Although all the owners I have flown for own all the seats in the aircraft, including the one I occupy, they have all, with no exeception, asked if I would mind if they took the jump seat. I like it very much when they are up front with me, but, if I didn't, I don't really know how I would tell them they were not welcome.

always welcome, but do wish they would shut up

totally agree, especially on a difficult approach, then they see how you justify the salary.....

but if only they would shut up, this relates to the captain.....he is so keen to show how clever we are, he will not shut up...and with the intercom on, is very distracting.

rant over.

Our owner is a white-knuckle flyer, so he likes to be firmly ensconced in his seat in the cabin of the aircraft, with the flight deck door shut but he does come spend some time in the cockpit during the cruise phase of flight, and only if it is perfectly smooth - otherwise he stays put in bed, or in his seat.

His best friend however, is an ex F-15 and G-IV guy, and he prefers to fly in the cockpit whenever he is flying along. So we spend quite a lot of time listening to him talk...

Hahaha

Depends if we are talking about a certain retired high ranking military chap, or about somebody I have flown with as crew member recently. Oh how ambiguous

I realized almost immediately that my crew would have a very difficult time saying no to me if I were to ask for the privilege of riding the jump seat, so I never, ever ask. If they invite me, I occupy it, and thank them afterwards.

I also make it an absolute policy to never speak, unless spoken to in the cockpit. My view is that the crew owns everything forward of the cockpit bulkhead. Strange, I know, but so far it has worked well for us.

Was mostly a curiosity question. One of those "Gee I wonder how other people handle this?" sort of questions. Thanks for your answers

Nice view You have previously stated that you hire ex-Air Force guys, so there is no question about their experience levels, but what about the synergy that exists between the two of them? SURELY as their employer, you have a right to observe them in their working environment?

I watched two hours of a sim session when we were evaluating them, and I guess I've occupied the jump seat a total of four times, at their invitation. Unless they're doing a Jekyll and Hyde number when I'm not around, I'm thoroughly impressed with their interaction.

We donīt have a jumpseat, but some of the board members come to our office during cruise and chat with us. I like it very much, one of our guys is a rc model heli pilot, my colleague and I are rc modelers as well, so there is a common thing we usually start talking about. He wanted to be a pilot, but had a medical issue. So his questions and comments are usually spot on and when we explain something he really takes it in. Another guy has obtained an ultralight licence recently and Iīm an FI, so there is lots to talk about. Its also a good casual atmosphere to solve issues (which we seldom have) and show and explain when we want something...

When asked to leave, usually on top of descent, (politely...) there is no prob whatsoever.

Thats something I always loved about flying business aircraft. You really meet interesting folks...

In a previous job, we used to have the Hawker's jump seat available to the big boss, his three children and any guest that wanted to see how the job is done from the "front office".

The more time the boss spent in the hot seat looking how things are done in the flight deck, us explaining "why" things are done this or that way, he became way more relaxed in flight, (nervous flyer) and he also became more appreciative regarding our training and our work became better than ever.

Our jumpseat is always available to anyone who wants to be on it, but we have the final word if it's going to be used (safety, weather, workload etc.)
