Handling wise you have no choice, there is only one, the same for airlines. Horrible service most of the time.
For the hotel go for the Sheraton just next to the airport, good value for the price.
Cheers!

Maybe try Albenga LIMG about 1hr up the road, 100% better service and even if the bill was the same as LIMJ, at least they would handle the aircraft at LIMG.
Check limitations though as you have not mentioned aircraft type.

Genoa is my most hated airport in europe, I have had better service in holes in Africa! Allow at least 2 hrs for fuel as it may be their break time.....again!
I agree either Albenga or Nice.
If forced to go the Sheraton is good.

We just had a week there,
Handling was average, we self cater so no real issues other than getting ice.
As we were there for so long we stayed downtown, cant recommend where we stayed but there are plenty of choices. If you are price sensitive then use expedia or hrs.de
Fuel, ahhhh yes, if you dont want hassles, do what we do...... tanker. Previous aircraft always needed to fuel up there, always a PITA, thankfully those days are over for us.
